Job Summary

  • Wellstar Cobb in Austell, Georgia is seeking a FT Night Weekend Registered Sonographer.
  • The days and hours for the position are Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7:00pm – 7:30am.
  • This position will receive a sonographer specialty differential as well as evening, night and weekend differentials.
  • The Registered Sonographer must be flexible with work hours to meet department needs.
  • Must be dependable, accountable and cooperative.
  • Assists with providing safe, age‑appropriate care to patients by performing all exams according to department protocols.
  • Has the knowledge and ability to properly and safely obtain a quality diagnostic study.
  • Responsible for performing a wide range of technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative.
  • Able to independently perform job functions.
  • Sets up ultrasound equipment to provide imaging services and positions the patient for the procedure.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Patient Care

  • Verifies proper clinician order for procedure.
  • Obtains complete clinical history, gathers exam data and assesses for contraindicating conditions.
  • Ensures proper patient identification and correct right/left marker usage.
  • Reviews ultrasound images for clinically acceptable results and releases patients.
  • Responds to emergency situations and assists with maintaining life‑support equipment.
  • Assists technologists in other modalities when needed.
  • Observes patient condition and identifies when physician intervention is necessary.
  • Verifies patient identity using two unique identifiers.
  • Ensures patient privacy, comfort and dignity throughout examinations.
  • Demonstrates competence in selecting procedures, equipment, supplies and techniques appropriate to patient age.
  • Organizes schedule, time and priorities to complete required tasks within designated timeframes.
  • Follows physicians’ instructions during exams and procedures.
  • Uses critical thinking skills.
  • Communicates effectively with patients and families.
  • Asks clarifying questions.
  • Seeks clarification on unclear or ambiguous orders.
  • Understands and documents preprocedural verification and Time‑Out processes when appropriate.
  • Demonstrates and understands pre‑ and post‑procedural care.
  • Preps the patient for the procedure.
  • Demonstrates and understands sterile technique.

Education and Communication

  • Clearly explains procedure purpose using AIDET to reduce anxiety and promote cooperation.
  • Ensures patient questions or concerns are addressed; notifies physician when necessary.
  • Participates in orientation and training of new departmental employees.
  • Provides preparatory instructions and explanations to patients.
  • Documentation is concise, legible and precise.
  • Reads email each scheduled workday and follows through with assignments.
  • Completes all mandatory department and system‑wide education requirements.

Quality Control

  • Consistently produces acceptable images based on provider feedback and quality audits.
  • Verifies equipment is operational before each use by checking calibration and deficiencies.
  • Sends all studies to PACS immediately after completion; prints CDs when needed.
  • Prints and scans after‑hours teleradiography studies into PACS when applicable.
  • Completes all studies in RIS prior to PACS completion.
  • Prints teleradiography log sheets and submits them to Radiologist when applicable.
  • Performs and maintains probe disinfection logs and follows infection control policies.

Operations

  • Restocks linens and supplies and maintains the department in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Transports and positions patients; assists them on and off the procedure table.
  • Performs patient charging activities on the day service is rendered.
  • Applies supportive and immobilization devices when necessary.
  • Willingly assists coworkers and shares knowledge as time allows.
  • Performs clerical and support duties as needed to ensure service continuity.
  • Keeps supervisor informed and reports potential issues promptly.
  • Maintains productivity levels equal to department standards.
  • Operates all workstations associated with the ultrasound department.
  • Transfers and retrieves images from the ultrasound console to PACS.
  • Maintains compliance with Joint Commission and other regulatory standards.
  • Takes call as needed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all Wellstar policies, standards of work and code of conduct.

Equipment (Additional)

  • Adjusts technique to ensure the patient receives the lowest possible dose of ionizing radiation while maintaining image quality.
  • Reports malfunctioning equipment promptly.
  • Cleans, disinfects and maintains equipment per infection control and department schedules.
  • Performs other assigned duties.

Required Minimum Education

  • Graduate of an accredited Sonography Program — Required
  • Graduate of an accredited Sonography Program — Required (duplicate kept exactly as provided)

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)

(All required upon hire unless otherwise stated)

  • ARDMS Registered Medical Sonographer or ARRT‑S Sonography
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or BLS‑Instructor

Required Minimum Experience

  • Successful completion of a Sonography Training Program — Required
  • Minimum 1 year clinical experience — Preferred
