PRN Position


Full job description:

  • The Laboratory Assistant performs phlebotomy functions and non-technical tasks in the hospital laboratory. The Laboratory Assistant supports laboratory operations including specimen collection, processing, and data entry.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs venipuncture, fingerstick, and heel stick according to protocol,
  • Identifies patients accurately and labels specimens correctly at the bedside.
  • Prioritizes and expedites STAT draws and ensures timely transport of specimens.
  • Prepares specimens for testing, handles delicate samples appropriately, and coordinates with lab staff and reference labs.
  • Performs waived testing and assists with analyzer maintenance.
  • Accurately enters data and documentation into laboratory systems.
  • Organizes workload to complete assigned draws and tasks on schedule.
  • Assists co-workers, communicates effectively with nursing units regarding patient specimen status.
  • Maintains laboratory supplies, assists with inventory, and stocks phlebotomy materials.
  • Follows all laboratory policies, including safety and infection control measures.
  • Follows all exposure control plans for bloodborne/airborne pathogens and maintains compliance with protective barrier policies and annual education.
  • Promote effective working relationships, foster a supportive team environment, participate in meetings, and support the hospital’s mission and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENT

  • Active: Frequently lifts up to 50 pounds independently. Visual acuity correctable to 20/20. Color vision. Walks, stands, kneels, bends most of the time. Exhibits fine motor skills and manual dexterity necessary to perform the essential job functions of the position. Must be able to function in limited space and with frequent interruptions. Must be able to adapt to day-to-day temperature variations and moderate noise levels from equipment within the laboratory.

EXPOSURE RISK

  • Exposure Category I: Employee at risk for exposure to blood borne pathogens.

COMPLIANCE

  • Adheres to the federal, state, and local statutes and regulations.
  • Adheres to the Compliance Program policies and procedures of Down East Community.
  • Adheres to all Privacy and Security policies and procedures of Down East Community.
  • Communicates any concern related to compliance issues to manager of department or Compliance Officer.
  • Communicates any concern related to confidentiality issues to the Privacy Officer.

Requirements

Education, Training or Certifications Required:

HS Diploma required

Experience Required:

Experience in phlebotomy required

Preferred:

Phlebotomy certification from an accredited institution

Certification by a nationally recognized certifying agency such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

One year experience in specimen processing
