POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

 

TITLE:          EMT-Basic                                EMPLOYMENT TERM: 12 month full-time

EXEMPT/NON-EXEMPT:   Non-Exempt      FUNDING SOURCE:       IHS Contract

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be at least 18 years old, sober, of good character, physically fit, and a high school graduate or hold a GED, and must possess and maintain a New Mexico approved Emergency Medical Technician-Basic training certificate/license.
  2. Must possess a valid New Mexico driver’s license.
  3. Must possess a valid CPR card.
  4. Ability to maintain composure while dealing with all types of accidents and emergencies, and to make on the spot decisions regarding medical treatment in the field pursuant to established protocols.
  5. Ability to speak English and Navajo fluently preferred.
  6. Must attend a New Mexico approved EMT-Intermediate Training Course and attempt the certification exam within two years of hire.
  7. Must pass a full criminal background check.
  8. Must understand and accept that this is a first responder position and subject to being on call and to respond to emergencies when called upon to do so. Exception: If employee lives off the reservation, on-call is automatically waived and will receive no compensation for the $50.00 phone base stipend.

 

INDIAN PREFERENCE: Preferential consideration for employment will be given to persons of documented Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan Native Tribal membership, who meet the qualifications above, in accordance with the requirements of P.L. 93-638 and the Navajo Nation Tribal Code.

SUPERVISES:              NONE

 

PAY RANGE:               Grade I, ANSB General Scale

                                        When employee has accepted the on the on call requirement of this

                                         PD will receive the Grade I as identified, plus $2.50 an hour as

                                         Scheduled by supervisor and base telephone stipend of $50.00.

 

WORKING HOURS:    80 hours per pay period, alternating schedules days, evening, night and

                                          weekends.

 

LUNCH HOUR:           One hour lunch (flexible)

 

POSITION GOAL:  To provide emergency medical care in response to immediate local needs within the New Mexico EMT-Basic certification skill level; to provide auxiliary support in other areas of clinic function.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs emergency procedures at the EMT-Basic level including:
  2. Emergency driving techniques
  3. Use of EMS Statewide Communications Network
  4. Use of airway adjunctive equipment
  5. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  6. No-invasive emergency procedures
  7. Use of multi-lumen airways (combi tube or PTL)
  8. Splinting
  9. Wound management
  10. Use of pneumatic anti-shock trousers
  11. Monitoring of blood glucose with automated glucometer
  12. Semi-automatic defibrillation (rhythm documentation of cardiac activity)
  13. Assist with self-administration of patient’s own lifesaving medications under direct medical control. Medications include  nitroglycerine, premeasured inhalation devices for bronchospasm, premeasured epinephrine devices for anaphylaxis and known asthmatics
  14. Use of pulse oximetry
  15. Emergency childbirth (normal and abnormal presentation)
  16. Be able to administer the following allowable drugs under medical control:
  17. All allowable licensed EMT-Basic medications
  18. Activated charcoal
  19. Acetylsalicylic acid
  20. Acetaminophen
  21. Oral glucose
  22. Receives incoming EMS telephone and radio communications and dispatches
  23. Maintains emergency equipment and clinical areas as instructed.
  24.  Assists with other clinical functions as assigned., screening or medical records
  25. Completes daily EMS activity log and ambulance run reports as required.

 To qualify for pay grade (to include on call pay and base telephone stipend) established within this PD must accept being on call as schedule by supervisor failing to do so will result in previously established PD being utilized for the

    Employee’s pay grade.

  1. Other duties as assigned (restocking ambulance and exam rooms, cleaning ambulance after

           runs, etc.)

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

  1. This is a child sensitive position subject by law to fingerprinting and a criminal/character background investigation.
  2. At the employee’s discretion, the New Mexico approved EMT-Intermediate Training Course can be attempted.

 

EVALUATION:   Will be evaluated in accordance with the Alamo Navajo School Board, Inc., policies and procedures.
