What you will be doing

  • Surgical Technologist 

    Northern NJ Surgery Center

    Mahwah

    Ensuring the delivery of the highest quality of patient care, you will provide support to our Magnet surgical team. Your duties will include: assisting physicians and nurses in surgery using best practices of sterile technique, assembling, maintaining and tracking surgical instruments and equipment; and inspecting all packaged items to ensure integrity. We'll also rely on you to conduct pre-op, intra-op and post-op surgical counts according to AORN standards and maintaining the integrity of the surgical field during procedures. Your capacity to collaborate with your team to promote the highest standards of patient safety is critical to the mission of HSS.

    Minimum Requirements

    • High School diploma or equivalent and be a graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program

    • NBSTSA Certification required

    • American Heart Associate Heartsaver required

    • One year of experience required

Job Qualifications 

 

EDUCATION – Required 

High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.), may include specialized or vocational courses 

 

EXPERIENCE –Preferred 

Central processing, sterilization, OR instrumentation, power equipment and orthopedic implants Central processing, sterilization, OR instrumentation, power equipment and orthopedic implants Demonstrated knowledge of orthopedic instrumentation. Ability to articulate and demonstrate sterile processing procedures 

 

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS 

Continuous physical exertion Continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking/pushing/climbing and lifting material or equipment of heavy weight (50 lbs. or more) Examples: grounds staff and EMS. 

 

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS 

Indoor area with frequent exposure Located in an indoor area with frequent exposure to mild physical discomfort from dust, fumes, temperature, and noise. Examples: patient care providers and laboratory technicians.

Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, and other potentially infectious materials 

 

Position & Unit Accountabilities AKA Competencies 

 

  • Prepares room before the case and breaks down at the end of case to facilitate rapid case turnover in preparation for the next patient. Setup sterile table, checks equipment, instruments, medications/solutions and supplies needed preoperatively for the surgical procedure and communicates needs to the circulator. Facilitates efficient turnover time by prioritizing activities.

  • Demonstrates safe practice and complies with all standards concerning infection control and safety. Complies with policies and procedures concerning infection control and safety in order to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for patients, families, visitors and staff. Demonstrates competency, safety, and use of standard precautions to those tasks and aspects of patient care assigned per OR standard.  

  • Demonstrates Clinical Standards: Identifies, assembles, maintains, and demonstrates proper use of instrumentation and equipment for various surgical procedures. Performs initial, second, and final counts (including at relief) in accordance with AORN standards and hospital policy. Handles and passes all instruments and equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Verify the name of the specimen and transport media with the surgeon and circulating nurse prior to leaving the surgical field. Obtains necessary supplies and equipment to support the surgical procedure. Maintains knowledge of the location of implants, supplies, equipment, and instrumentation. Performs surgical hand scrub and dons gowns and gloves in accordance with AORN and hospital policy for self, assistants, and surgeons. Anticipates and responds appropriately to the needs of the surgeon. Reviews, follows, and updates surgeon preference cards in collaboration with CN III.
