National Direct AmeriCorps Wildlife Management Placement

 

Position Summary 

 

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, historic landmarks, community spaces, and much more across the country. 

 

This position is part of SCA’s National Direct Opportunity Youth Service Initiative (OYSI). OYSI is a partnership between SCA, AmeriCorps, and The Corps Network which engages youth ages 18–24 who are disconnected from school or work in hands-on conservation service that protect and restore public lands, waters, and recreation resources nationwide. The program provides job-skills training, support, and career pathways in environmental stewardship and infrastructure fields, while prioritizing placements for participants who meet opportunity-youth eligibility criteria.

 

This position will work with the Wildlife Management team at Haleakala National Park, primarily focusing on invasive predator control via trapping to protect threatened and endangered birds.

 

Member Impact

 

The member will play a vital role in support of the Park’s mission to protect and promote threatened and endangered bird species native to the Hawaiian Islands. Species include the Hawaiian goose (nene) and Hawaiian petrel. Bird species endemic to Hawaii are a strong component of Hawaii’s identity. The birds draw visitors and help to maintain the unique ecosystems of the Hawaiian Islands. The member will work directly in protecting the native species by controlling invasive predators and surveying native species populations.

 

Schedule 

 

June 29, 2026 – December 11, 2026

 

Hours

 

40 hours per week Monday-Friday with some weekends. A schedule of four 10-hour days a week may be available. Multi-day trips in the field will be required and occasional.

 

A minimum 30-minute lunch break is required each service day. Lunch periods do not count toward the required minimum service hours.

Essential Functions

 

The position functions will comply with all AmeriCorps Prohibited Activity restrictions specified in the SCA AmeriCorps Member Service Agreement and SCA Corps Member Handbook.

 

Control introduced predators (primarily non-native rats, mongooses, and feral cats) via trapping to protect threatened and endangered birds and control pests, 75%; monitor birds (Hawaiian goose and Hawaiian petrel) for nesting activity and production of young, 20%.

 

Daily solo hiking/backpacking over rugged, steep volcanic terrain at high elevations (6000-10,000 ft.) in harsh weather conditions and including 3-4 day backcountry trips.

 

Marginal Functions

 

Data entry to support monitoring activities, 5%.

 

Required Qualifications 

 

Must be in excellent physical condition - work occurs at high elevation (6000ft+).

 

AmeriCorps Eligibility Requirements: 

 

This position is part of a specialized SCA AmeriCorps program and if you are selected, you will be serving as an SCA AmeriCorps member. To be eligible for this position you must meet these basic AmeriCorps Eligibility Requirements:

 

· Being a citizen, permanent resident, or national of the United States; 

· Being at least 18 years or older; 

· Having a high school diploma or equivalent or actively working to complete; 

· Being willing to undergo National Service Criminal History Check after acceptance of position, including criminal background, sex offender and FBI checks.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

Knowledge of native Hawaiian bird species and experience identifying them.

 

Commitment Required

 

The member is required to average 40 hours per week over 24 weeks. They are required to arrive at a pre-determined location at the beginning of each service day in appropriate attire for the day’s activities.

 

Living Accommodations 

 

Local candidates with their own housing on Maui are preferred. Shared Park housing may be available for off-island candidates but is not guaranteed. Park housing located a short walking distance from the Natural Resource Division headquarters within the Park boundary.

Compensation  

 

·        Amount of Living Allowance member will receive: $600/week

·        Amount of a one-time roundtrip travel allowance: $1,300

·        Reimbursable amount for gear and in-season duty-travel: $2,375

·        Amount of the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award being offered for successful completion of the member term of service: $3,697.50 

·        All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes. 

·        Childcare coverage (if applicable): Eligible for childcare assistance through AmeriCorps

·        Eligible for Federal Student Loan forbearance and interest payment deferment through AmeriCorps for qualifying student loans

 

Training and Additional Benefits

·        Training in handling and setting predator control traps

·        Training will not exceed 20% of total service hours
