The Field Training Officer (FTO) position includes all duties and responsibilities outlined in the applicable Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic job description, with the addition of formal training, mentorship, and evaluation responsibilities.

FTOs are responsible for the safe and efficient response, treatment, and transport of patients requesting or requiring emergent and non-emergent medical services, utilizing equipment and clinical skills appropriate to their level of certification (EMT-Basic, AEMT, or Paramedic).

Field Training Officers play a critical role in preparing new employees to function safely, efficiently, and professionally within the Cataldo Ambulance Service system. Through structured teaching, objective evaluation, and timely constructive feedback, FTOs ensure trainees develop the clinical, operational, and professional competencies necessary to deliver high-quality patient care and customer service.

FTOs serve as clinical role models, operational mentors, and evaluators while maintaining the highest standards of patient care and professionalism.

Field Training Officer Responsibilities

  • Deliver quality patient care in accordance with clinical policies, statewide protocols, and accepted standards of care.
  • Serve as a primary training officer for new employees, conducting field training and evaluations in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with EMS agencies, physicians, and other healthcare providers to support patient care and operational coordination.
  • Maintain knowledge of and comply with all company policies, procedures, and operational guidelines.
  • Promote and model the organization’s expectations for professionalism, accountability, and workplace culture at all times, including when no trainee is present.
  • Ensure adherence to attendance policies and scheduled shifts to support adequate system staffing.
  • Demonstrate excellent clinical care and customer service.
  • Complete and submit all required documentation in a timely manner, including daily checklists, patient care reports (PCRs), and trainee feedback.
  • Operate company vehicles safely and in accordance with company policy.
  • Attend required meetings and participate in program reviews related to training priorities and operational strategies.
  • Remain flexible for assignment to any company unit based on operational and training needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains knowledge of and complies with all company policies, procedures, and guidelines at all times.
  • Must maintain a reliable attendance record
  • Completes other duties as requested and assigned

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Licensure, Certification, Registration:

  • Current EMT or Paramedic license 
  • Current valid driver’s license 

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year of field experience required
  • Minimum of 6 months employment with Cataldo Ambulance

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated strong clinical competence and documentation skills.
  • Employees must be in good standing with both Clinical and Operations (e.g., compliance with Sync Board requirements, attendance, and disciplinary standards).
  • No significant or unresolved clinical deficiencies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and professional discretion at all times.

Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Ability to meet the essential duties and physical, mental and sensory requirements of the position at all times. 
  • Comply with UDS drug screening at any and all times
  • Satisfactory background check and MA CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information), verification required annually.
  • Verification of an acceptable motor vehicle driving record, verification required annually.

Documentation Requirements

  • The FTO feedback form must be completed by the end of each training shift.
  • Feedback must be objective, professionally written, and accurately reflect the trainee’s performance.
  • Incomplete, late, or insufficient documentation may result in removal from the FTO program.

Quality Assurance Review

All FTO documentation is subject to periodic review by QA/QI and Operations Management. The FTO Coordinator will review submitted feedback to ensure accuracy, objectivity, and professionalism, and to support the effective training and development of new employees.

 Physical Requirements 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met and maintained by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. The position requires significant physical strength, dexterity and the ability to function in very adverse environments. 

This job requires:

  • Ability to lift and maneuver 125+ pounds with assistance and without difficulty
  • Ability to ascend/descend stairs repeatedly and the ability to lift and carry 125+ pounds up and down stairs
  • Ability to sit, stand or kneel for long periods of time
  • Ability to walk without difficulty and without affecting the immediate performance of job-related duties.
  • Ability to bend, stoop and crawl as necessary
  • Ability to occasionally work in low light and confined spaces
  • Ability to work within a mobile environment.

This job requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid and dry conditions. The employee is frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

FTOs will receive a $4.00 per hour stipend under the following conditions:

  • The FTO is assigned a trainee for the shift.
  • A complete and properly documented FTO feedback form is submitted in accordance with program expectations

When the FTO Stipend Does NOT Apply

  • No trainee is assigned
  • The FTO is not functioning in the training role
  • Required documentation is missing, late, or inadequate
  • The FTO is removed from the program.
