Introduction
The Quantum Ion Trap Photonics Integration (PMTS) role is a senior technical leadership position within the GF Labs / Technology Development organization. It reports into the Quantum Ion Trap Lead Integrator. This role is responsible for defining and driving the integration of photonic components and optical interfaces required for scalable ion-trap-based quantum computing platforms. The position bridges advanced photonic device concepts with semiconductor process, integration, and packaging realities to enable manufacturable and scalable quantum hardware.
Job Summary
As a Principal Member of Technical Staff, this role serves as a technical authority in photonics integration for ion-trap quantum computing platforms. This individual will drive innovation in photonics-enabled quantum systems by defining architectures, solving complex integration challenges, and enabling cross-functional execution across process, device, packaging, and system teams. The role requires both deep technical expertise and the ability to translate complex photonics and semiconductor tradeoffs into clear execution plans and deliverables.
Essential Responsibilities
Define and lead photonics integration strategies for ion-trap quantum computing platforms, including optical waveguides, gratings, couplers, modulators, and optical interfaces.
Architect integration approaches that combine photonic structures with ion trap devices, BEOL integration, and advanced packaging technologies to meet system-level requirements.
Drive development and optimization of optical performance, including coupling efficiency, insertion loss, alignment tolerances, variability, and cross-talk.
Define and execute experiments, simulations, and characterization plans to improve photonic device performance, yield, and reliability.
Lead yield-learning and integration debug efforts, including root-cause analysis of photonic and process integration challenges.
Translate quantum system requirements into manufacturable photonics design rules, process requirements, and test/characterization methodologies.
Drive cross-functional alignment with photonics design, process integration, device engineering, packaging, reliability, and manufacturing teams to ensure successful system integration and performance validation.
Define and track technical milestones, including performance, variability, yield, and reliability metrics.
Serve as a senior technical interface with internal leadership, customers, and external partners, including academic institutions and government programs.
Mentor engineers and establish best practices in photonics integration, ensuring technical rigor, scalability, and repeatability across the organization.
Required Qualifications
Education: MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Physics, Materials Science, or related field
Years of Experience: 12+ years in semiconductor, photonics, or related advanced device integration fields
Travel: ~10–15%
Preferred Qualifications
Deep expertise in photonic device integration, including optical waveguides, gratings, couplers, modulators, and optical interfaces
Experience with optical characterization of photonic components and integrated photonic circuits, including development of high-sensitivity measurement techniques
Familiarity with photonics modeling and simulation approaches for PIC design and process-variation sensitivity analysis
Experience supporting externally funded programs or joint development efforts with government, academic, or industrial partners.
