Position Summary

The Manufacturing Engineer will lead process improvement and technical development efforts within a fabrication-intensive manufacturing plant, with a specific focus on transitioning manual machining operations to modern CNC machining capability. This role is responsible for improving safety, quality, delivery, and cost performance across fabrication, machining, and assembly processes. The Engineer will work closely with Production, Engineering, and Management to ensure stable, efficient, and scalable manufacturing operations.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead the transition from manual machining to CNC machining, including equipment selection, tooling strategy,

programming standards, and operator training.

• Develop CNC programs (or oversee programming) using CAM software and ensure consistent machining

practices.

• Establish machining process controls, standard work, and quality checkpoints to ensure repeatability and

accuracy.

• Partner with Maintenance and Engineering to define preventive maintenance requirements and machine

capability expectations.

• Analyze fabrication workflows (cutting, forming, welding, machining, finishing) to identify bottlenecks and

implement improvements.

• Optimize material flow, workstation layout, and tooling to reduce waste and increase throughput.

• Lead root-cause analysis and corrective actions for safety, quality, and delivery issues.

• Support fixture design, tooling development, and process documentation.

• Drive Lean initiatives including 5S, standard work, SMED, visual management, and Kaizen events.

• Implement process controls and metrics to monitor performance and sustain improvements.

• Support the development of Centers of Excellence for machining, welding, and fabrication processes.

• Work directly with Production Supervisors, Operators, and Engineers to troubleshoot issues and improve daily

performance.

• Collaborate with Engineering on manufacturability, print updates, and design improvements.

• Train operators and technicians on new CNC equipment, machining methods, and process standards.


Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, manufacturing, or industrial engineering.

• At least three (3) years of experience in a fabrication or machining-focused manufacturing environment.

• Hands-on experience with CNC machining, programming, tooling, and machining process optimization.

• Working knowledge of manufacturing operations, mechanical assembly, ergonomics, and lean tools to execute

continuous improvement projects.

• Strong organizational, analytical, and inter-personal communication skills.

• Ability to work with cross-functional teams and drive change.

• Proven experience with Continuous Improvement Lean Methodologies (Six Sigma experience preferred).

• Previous experience leading large capital projects, preferred.


Technical Skills

• Advanced skill with all MS Office products

• Proficient with Solid Works or other 3D design software

• Proficient with machine programming/CAD/CAM
