Under general supervision of the Histology/Cytology Manager, along with Wellstar Laboratory Medical Directors and Ā diagnostic expertise of the pathologist group, directly supervises all functions of the Cytology Section. Ā Is responsible for planning, coordinating, staffing and technical issues of the section. Ā Responsible for working with co-workers to efficiently perform cytology duties , ThinPrep screening (GYN-automated assisted PAP screening, Ā Non-GYN, stat reads and FNA), Ā special cytological preparations and evaluates specimens from different anatomic sites for interpretation utilizing appropriate criteria for both immediate and same day microscopic examination. Ā
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
CYTOLOGY PREPARATION:Ā
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Ensure that specimens and patients are properly labeled with patient and site information when received in the laboratory
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Accurately accession and enter patient data and specimen type into the Laboratory computer system
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Process each specimen maintaining patient identification through the preparation process
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Cytology prep is performed by the Cytotechnologist, per facility as applicable
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Verify the quality control (routine, histochemistry stains and/or immunohistochemistry) and patient slides are acceptable before forwarding to pathologist
PATHOLOGY COMPUTER, PRINCIPLE AND INSTRUMENTATION:Ā
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Knowledge of all cytology instrumentation and how to troubleshoot
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Pull request and pending logs sendouts in the Misys and CoPath computer systems
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Enter sendout test charges as well as intraoperative consultation and ThinPrep Pathologist review charges
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Have complete knowledge and understanding for CoPath Cytology billing, physician group codes
QUALITY MANAGEMENT:Ā
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Resolve and inform any quality control and/or quality assurance issues to supervisors of involved departments
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Perform maintenance check on cytology equipment documentation required by regulatory agencies
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Monitor patient reports and prepare Reference lab requisitions to be sent out for consultation; ensure HIPPA compliance
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Coordinate staffing, vacation, and work duties to maintain a steady workflow
SPECIAL PROCEDURES:Ā
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Perform NON-GYN screening duties accurately and efficiently meeting 0% error threshold
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Perform āstatā FNA procedures and routine FNA within acceptable turnaround time
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Perform GYN-Automated assisted PAP duties accurately and efficiently meeting 0% error threshold per facility as applicable
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Enter cytological findings in the laboratory computer system and distribute to the assigned pathologist
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Continually update and follow all regulatory guidelines set by OSHA, CLIA, CAP, JCAHO, etc.
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Perform embedding, microtomy, special staining and IHC techniques per facility as applicable

Required Minimum Education
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Bachelor's degree required
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Cytotechnologist - ASCP preferred
Required Minimum Experience
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Minimum 4 years job-related experience required
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Minimum 1 year Cytologist experience required
