Performs skilled transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records, ordering of signs and materials, and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

DST II:

  • Orders supplies and materials from district shop

  • Orders sign from the regional sign shop

  • Inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs

  • Assists transportation maintenance crews with maintenance-related work as required; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions

  • Mixes and place concrete for sign support foundations; moves cement bags and other items related to these duties

  • Operates a boom and bucket truck and/or specialized sign truck to install roadway signs

  • Performs and maintains inventory of signs

  • Performs preventive maintenance on sign truck

  • Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other departmental guidance

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

DST III (in addition to the above):

  • May service as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications

  • Assists transportation maintenance crews with maintenance-related work as required; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions

  • Mixes and places concrete for sign support foundations; moves cement bags and other items related to these duties

  • Operates a boom and bucket truck and/or specialized sign truck to install roadway signs

  • Performs and maintains inventory of signs

  • Performs preventive maintenance on sign truck

  • Conducts nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure reflectivity of signs, delineators, stripping, and retroreflective pavement markers (RPMs).

  • Inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs

     



Minimum Qualifications:

Experience: 1 year in sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Experience: 2 years in sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with "N" endorsement code or have obtained a Class "A" CDL with "N" endorsement code, within 90 calendar days from date of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat;below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device

  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs

  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
