Job Description

Department: Continuing Education and Workforce Development

General Statement of Job

The Student Success Technician is responsible for case management and career development services for students participating in CTE programs. Assists the Coordinator with the development, coordination, and implementation of student support services and activities to improve student success, retention, course completion and graduation.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Assists in conducting student orientations and student assessments.
  • Guides students when transitioning  from Continuing Education to credit programs by referring them to Academic and Faculty Advisors by declared major.
  • Maintains contact with students with excessive absences in their classes.
  • Refers absentee students to instructors, counselors, case workers, or Centers for Learning Excellence.
  • Provides students with postsecondary education and employment opportunities.
  • Assists in coordinating work experiences and field trips for students; including college tours.
  • Tracks and reports data to supervisor regarding number of group trainings, job placement, training completion, successes of students after program completion and other data needed.
  • Assists in planning and overseeing in the development of site Career Pathway Orientations/Workshops for all CTE programs.
  • Assists in distributing program information and coordinates all aspects of CTE career pathway programs.
  • Serves as Campus Security Authority.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate's degree required; Bachelor's degree preferred.   
  • At least two (2) years of experience in advising, counseling or teaching in a community college; knowledge of Continuing Education and Academic programs preferred.
  • Case management experience in career counseling.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong computer, organizational, and management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written skills to effectively communicate with students, staff, faculty, and the general public in a courteous manner.
  • Sensitivity to all confidentiality of students and college issues.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with prospective students, college and high school faculty, staff and the public commitment to a team building approach.
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district.
  • Commitment to the community college philosophy of education.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Security Sensitive position: All applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy.
  • Must have or qualify for a valid Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance.

Physical Requirements
