The Carpenter Technology Corporation “Hartsville Operations” located in McBee, South Carolina, is a mini-mill supplying a variety of sizes and specifications of high-quality round, square and hexagonal stainless steel bars for distribution. Carpenter Technology acquired Talley Metals in 1997 to increase manufacturing capacity within the corporation’s core Specialty Alloys Operations division.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEER III – CONTROLS

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY Primary role of the position is to develop; project manage and execute CAPEX projects as the project manager in the areas of Automation & Controls.   As a control engineer, you will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:  

  • Design and Development: 
  • Identify and understand the company’s needs related to control systems. 
  • Analyze data to identify areas for improvement. 
  • Implement solutions to enhance control system efficiency. 
  • Technical Support and Mentorship: 
  • Provide technical support to team members. 
  • Work with maintenance to remedy breakdowns. 
  • System Configuration and Optimization: 
  • Configure, standardize, and optimize control systems for equipment and processes. 
  • Define system requirements and participate in system configuration. 
  • Act as a liaison between end-users and system developers/OEM’s 
  • Ensuring compliance with safety regulations and quality standards 
  • Project Management: 
  • Develop and execute projects from start to finish, ensuring successful implementation.   
  • Supervise installation, testing, and commissioning of control systems. 
  • Manage project costs, schedules, and budgets. 
  • Develop business cases where automation and control upgrades can improve the thru-put and costs for a given work center or process.
  • Preform all other duties and special projects assigned.

REQUIRED FOR THE ELECTRICAL ENGINEER III – CONTROLS

  •  Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field. 
  • 5+ years working in the controls and automation industry. Experience in the steel automation industry. 
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with engineering-related software. 
  • Knowledge of lean principles. 
  • PLC Programming is required.  Familiarity with Rockwell and Siemens controllers is preferred. 
  • HMI development is required.  Familiarity with Aveva InTouch is preferred. 
  • AC and DC drive knowledge required. 
  • Expertise with EtherNet/IP, Industrial Ethernet and Profibus Networks (CAN) is valuable. 
  • Knowledge of automated equipment systems, robotics, and material handling is preferred. 
  •  Excellent written and verbal communication skills, well organized and the ability to prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions.
  • Willing to work in a fast paced, ever-changing work environment.
