Sonic Summary

info
  • Altronic is seeking an Embedded Electronics Hardware Engineer to develop rugged embedded control systems for industrial stationary engines.
  • The role requires a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field and at least 3 years of hands-on experience in embedded hardware design, focusing on schematic capture and PCB layout.
  • Key responsibilities include designing high-reliability multilayer PCBs, debugging prototypes, and collaborating with systems engineers and firmware developers.
  • Candidates should be proficient with EDA tools, understand analog and digital design, and have hands-on skills with lab equipment.
  • The position offers a competitive salary and operates in a professional office environment with standard business hours.

Altronic has long been regarded as the world's leading manufacturer of ignition and control systems for industrial engines largely used in the oil and gas industry. Our products represent the industry standard for quality, which are all designed to improve engine performance and enhance reliability. We are looking for a skilled Embedded Electronics Hardware Engineer with a strong primary focus on schematic capture and PCB layout to join our team developing rugged embedded control systems for the industrial stationary engine market.

In this hands-on role, you will own the core hardware design process: translating system requirements into detailed schematics, developing high-reliability multilayer PCB layouts optimized for harsh industrial environments, and actively bringing up and debugging prototypes in the lab. You'll work closely with systems engineers, firmware developers, and manufacturing to deliver products that withstand vibration, extreme temperatures, EMI, and decades of continuous operation in power generation, gas compression, and heavy industrial applications.

This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented hardware designer who loves the full cycle of circuit design - from initial concept sketches to functional prototypes on the bench.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze, design, and develop analog and digital circuits as required
  • Create detailed, well-documented schematics for embedded systems including microcontrollers, power supplies, analog sensor interfaces, high-voltage drivers, and industrial communication circuits
  • Perform component selection, derating analysis, and worst-case circuit analysis for reliability in harsh conditions
  • Design high-reliability multilayer PCBs (4-6 layers typical) with focus on signal integrity, power distribution, thermal management, EMI/EMC mitigation, and mechanical constraints
  • Optimize layouts for manufacturability, testability, and long-term field reliability (vibration, shock, -40°C to +85°C operation)
  • Collaborate with external layout resources when needed, but personally own critical designs
  • Assemble, power-up, and debug first-article prototypes using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, thermal imaging, and environmental chambers
  • Identify and resolve hardware issues (noise, timing, power sequencing, thermal hotspots, etc.)
  • Support firmware integration and system-level validation on engine test stands
  • Work directly with systems engineers to refine requirements and architecture
  • Contribute to our component library, design guidelines, and DFx (design for excellence) processes
  • Participate in root-cause analysis for field returns and legacy product sustaining
  • Conduct design reviews
  • Communications protocols over hardware networks CAN, RS485, ETHERNET

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in embedded hardware design, with strong emphasis on schematic capture and PCB layout.
  • Proficiency with EDA tools (KiCad preferred)
  • Solid understanding of analog/digital design, power electronics, high-speed signals, and EMI best practice
  • Experience bringing up and debugging complex prototypes in a lab environment
  • Familiarity with industrial/automotive-grade design practices (derating, conformal coating, wide-temp components)
  • Hands-on skills with lab equipment (scopes, multimeters, soldering stations, logic analyzers)
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation discipline

Preferred Requirements:

  • Knowledge of engines and how they operate
  • Experience designing electronics for stationary engines, heavy equipment, or similar harsh-environment applications
  • Knowledge of industrial protocols (CAN/J1939, Modbus) and safety certifications (CSA, UL, IEC, ATEX)

Work Environment: This position operates in a professional office environment. Standard business hours apply, with flexibility to meet project deadlines as needed. We're an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without attention to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran or disability status.
