Technology & Event Technician

Medora, ND

THE THEODORE ROOSEVELT PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY FOUNDATION

“Believe you can, and you’re halfway there.” -Theodore Roosevelt

The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library (TRPL) is a world-class cultural institution in Medora, North Dakota, dedicated to the life, legacy, and enduring impact of the 26th President of the United States. Our exhibits blend cutting-edge immersive technology with historic storytelling — including conversational AI experiences, large-scale AV systems, and interactive installations built to the highest standards in the industry. TRPL also hosts a robust calendar of internal, public, and third-party events that rely on professional AV production. The technology team is small, highly capable, and responsible for the full technology footprint of the institution.

This role offers the rare opportunity to develop skills across two disciplines — exhibit technology and live event AV production — at one of the most technologically sophisticated cultural institutions in the country.

About the Role

The Technology & Event AV Technician is a dual-focus, hands-on role that splits its time equally between supporting TRPL's exhibit and IT systems and providing AV production support for the institution's event programming. On the exhibit and IT side, this individual assists the technology team with first-response troubleshooting, issue documentation, vendor tracking, and physical repairs across our complex exhibit environments. On the event side, this individual sets up, operates, and strikes AV systems for internal staff events, public programming, and third-party rentals — serving as a reliable technical presence that makes every event run smoothly. This role requires flexibility, a service mindset, and a genuine interest in both the technical and people-facing dimensions of AV and IT work. Evening and weekend availability is a regular expectation given TRPL's event calendar.

Core Competencies

Technical Troubleshooting & Problem Solving
Diagnoses AV, exhibit, and basic IT issues logically; isolates problems, identifies solutions, and knows when to escalate.

AV Production & Technical Execution
Confidently sets up, operates, and strikes audio, video, presentation, streaming, and related event technology.

Reliability & Operational Discipline
Consistently follows procedures, completes setups and checks on time, maintains equipment, and follows through without excessive supervision.

Service & Communication
Provides professional, responsive support to staff, presenters, vendors, and external clients; communicates technical information clearly to non-technical audiences.

Adaptability & Judgment
Moves effectively between exhibit technology, IT support, and live events; remains calm under pressure, makes sound decisions, and learns new systems quickly.

Responsibilities

Exhibit & IT Support (~50%)

  • Assist the technology team with day-to-day monitoring and first-response troubleshooting of exhibit technology issues.
  • Execute start-of-day and end-of-day procedures to open and close the exhibit galleries.
  • Document observed issues accurately — symptoms, conditions, and steps taken — to support clear tracking and informed decision-making by senior team members.
  • Log updates and status changes in the team's ticketing and documentation systems.
  • Perform hands-on work within exhibit environments, including cable swaps, component replacements, mount adjustments, and hardware installation.
  • Assist in diagnosing AV signal chain issues, tracing signal paths from source to destination.
  • Reference system diagrams, cabling documentation, and rack layouts to assist in accurate fault isolation.
  • Participate in vendor communications, providing accurate technical observations and helping track open cases to resolution.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance tasks on exhibit technology systems as scheduled.
  • Provide general IT support as directed — peripheral setup, workstation staging, basic helpdesk tasks — to support the broader technology team.

Event AV Support (~50%)

  • Set up, operate, and strike AV systems for TRPL's full range of events — including internal staff and board meetings, public programming, and third-party rental events.
  • Configure and operate audio systems including mixing consoles, wired and wireless microphones, speakers, and monitor setups for live events.
  • Set up and operate video systems including projectors, LED displays, confidence monitors, video switching, and presentation playback.
  • Support live streaming and recording of events when required, including camera operation, capture device setup, and basic encoding/streaming workflows.
  • Serve as the on-site AV point of contact for third-party rental clients and external event producers, providing professional and responsive technical support.
  • Coordinate with event staff, facilities, and vendors in advance of events to confirm technical requirements and ensure readiness.
  • Maintain event AV equipment inventory — tracking condition, flagging needs for repair or replacement, and keeping storage areas organized.
  • Provide clear pre-event briefings to presenters and clients on microphone use, presentation flow, and AV system basics.
  • Respond calmly and effectively to technical issues during live events, minimizing disruption to guests and presenters.

Qualifications

  • 1+ years of hands-on experience in AV production, live events, IT support, or a closely related technical field — formal training or vocational education in a relevant discipline may be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Working knowledge of AV signal flow — able to trace a signal from source to destination and identify where a problem is likely occurring.
  • Experience with audio mixing, microphone setup, or live sound reinforcement in any capacity (professional, volunteer, academic, or self-taught).
  • Comfortable with physical installation and hands-on technical work in a variety of environments, including public-facing spaces.
  • Reliable and service-oriented — able to stay composed under pressure, communicate clearly with non-technical clients and colleagues, and solve problems on the fly.
  • Able to follow technical documentation, system diagrams, and verbal instructions accurately.

Preferred

  • Experience operating audio consoles (digital or analog) in a live event setting.
  • Familiarity with video switching, projection, or LED display systems.
  • Exposure to live streaming platforms or recording/capture workflows.
  • Experience providing AV support to external clients or rental groups in a professional setting.
  • Familiarity with Q-SYS, Dante, or networked AV environments.
  • Exposure to IT helpdesk, endpoint support, or AV-over-IP troubleshooting.
  • Experience in a museum, cultural institution, hospitality, or event venue environment.

Working Conditions

  • Must reside within 60 miles of Medora, ND, or be willing to relocate prior to start date.
  • Full-time, hourly (non-exempt) position
  • Flexible schedule including evenings and weekends to support the TRPL event calendar.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds
  • Ability to climb ladders, work in mechanical rooms, and access confined or elevated spaces
  • Ability to stand and remain on your feet for extended periods.

Benefits

Full benefits include 403(b), medical insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability, as well as 20 days of paid time off and 10 days of holidays. Starting hourly rate of pay ranges between $28.00 to $32.00/hour, commensurate with experience.
