Position Summary

Works under direct supervision to perform physical labor in support of skilled tasks and participates in the learning of such skills in the Roads, Bridges, & Engineering Department.

Pay Grade: 41H
 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of experience as a laborer assisting in the functions of a skilled area; AND
  • Tenth (10) grade education; AND
  • Experience in concrete construction, use of hand tools and related power tools preferred.
  • PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED. 
     

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Builds, erects, and sets grade metal and wooden forms for concrete placement.
  • Pours finishes and cures concrete using mechanical, as well as hand tools.
  • Builds lines and finishes to grade brick junction boxes, drop inlet boxes, and drainage manholes.
  • Cleans and maintains tools, equipment, and materials used in the construction and repair of drainage structures.
  • Drives two and one half (2 1/2) ton crew truck, two (2) ton dump truck, and other utility vehicles.
  • Builds, climbs, and works on OSHA approved scaffolding.
  • Assists Foreman in the laying out of control lines and grades for structures.
  • Assists Foreman in supervising inmate laborers.
  • Performs housekeeping tasks that are necessary to maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Acts as an essential worker to respond to emergencies.
  • Performs other related duties as required or directed.
     

KSAs

  • Ability to perform all work related to concrete, such as building forms, tying steel, setting grades, finishing concrete, and use of tools associated with this type of work.
  • Ability to make general mathematical computations necessary in the construction of drainage structures, headwalls, abutments and related works.
  • Ability to read and record distance with carpenter ruler or tape.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use hand tools, related power tools, and air tools.
  • Ability to read and understand written instructions.
     

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to consistently lift seventy-five (75) to ninety (90) lbs.
  • Must be able to use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Must be able to work outside in changing weather conditions, i.e. snow, flooding, ice, and high winds.
  • Must pass a physical examination.
