2026 Department of Environmental Management (DEM) SEASONAL PROGRAM

The State annually employs qualified responsible individuals in a variety of positions with the State's Parks, Beaches, Research Programs, and Administrative Offices during a specific limited period. Ā Applicants will be considered for open seasonal positions based on their qualifications, availability, and willingness to travel to the assigned location (s).

Many of the classifications have a three-step pay-grade. Ā An employee in any of these classifications is paid at the first step during his or her first season. Ā An employee returning to the same three-step classification for a second season is paid at the second step during that season. Ā An employee to the same three-step classification for a third or subsequent session is paid at the third step during that season.

This position works under the supervision of a superior within the RI Division of Agriculture.

Illustrative Examples of Work Performed

To compile, update, and analyze complex sets of data for technical reports and assignments, perform complex editing of a difficult nature including but not limited to, Assisting in the inspection of plant, vegetable and nursery stock grown in RI; Assisting in the tracing of potentially infested and infected plant and nursery stock imported into RI; Assisting in the surveying and trapping of insects that are determined to be plant pests; Assisting with surveying and sampling of plants and nursery stock to determine whether these plants are infected with a plant pathogen; Assisting with the response activities of the Division if plant pests or pathogens or invasive insects are detected; Assisting with the administration of the state’s organic certification program; and do related work as required. This position requests a college degree or current enrollment in a college program that includes natural sciences such as horticulture, botany, entomology, soil and crop science, biology, environmental science or equivalent/related experience. This position may be required to work outside of regular business hours and ability to withstand long days working the field, often in varying weather and environmental conditions.
