Job Description Summary:

Experienced PA, Surgical Assistant, or House Physician with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience specifically in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
The ideal candidate will have strong operating room and surgical-assisting skills, including knowledge of cardiothoracic anatomy, sterile technique, surgical instrumentation, tissue retraction, hemostasis, suturing, and perioperative patient care. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with surgeons and the surgical team while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and quality care.

Position Responsibilities

  • Assists with positioning and transferring of patients pre and post-operatively using proper body mechanics while monitoring patient safety.
  • Maintains current licensure and current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification keeping written evidence on file at all times.
  • Participates in insertion of catheters and/or lines, draping and prepping of patients as needed.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy and physiology as it relates to the surgical procedure and patient positioning.
  • Uses proper precautions when handling sharps and instrumentation. Wears appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when scrubbed at the surgical field.
  • Assures maintenance of sterile filed until dressing are applied, x-rays are taken, and/or patient is out of the OR.
  • Anticipates surgeon's need for exposure, retracting tissues or organs by use of one hand, minimizing tissue damage and visual obstruction to the surgeon.
  • Maintains a dry surgical field with utilization of proper suctioning techniques and appropriate electrocautery.
  • Uses surgical instruments to clamp bleeding vessels. Applies sponges or pressure effectively.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of proper care and handling of specialty instruments.
  • Maintains a neutral zone when passing sharps on the sterile filed.
  • Under the supervision of the surgeon, uses ligating clips and demonstrates proper ligaiton and cutting of vessels.
  • Performs appropriate surgical scrub procedure according to policy.
  • Demonstrates effective knot tying techniques.
  • Demonstrates the ability to utilize sutures or staples correctly to approximate tissues.
  • Alerts circulating nurse to any breaks in aseptic techniques and initiates correction as needed.
  • Maintains current licensure and BCLS certification, keeping written evidence on file at all times.
  • Utilizes and organizes time between cases effectively to meet the department needs.
  • Promotes and participates in hospital performance improvement activities including, but not limited to, data collection, participation in interdisciplinary teams(s) and analysis and implementation of team findings.
  • Develops individual work goals annually; evaluates status of work goals throughout the year and reports on accomplishments of goals with next annual evaluation.
  • Performs history and physical examination and requests diagnostic studies according to the department protocol. Also, presents all cases to the attending physician for medical direction.
  • Evaluates and treats injured patients with minor problems after verbal consultation with the attending physician (s) and refers complicated cases in an appropriate manner.
  • Provide general health counseling to patients after consultation and documents treatment activities in an appropriate manner.
  • Demonstrate the ability to understand and react effectively to the unique needs of patients > 16 years of age.

  • Education

    • If a PA, Associate degree with PA license; Bachelor's degree in area of expertise preferred. If a SA, Bachelor's Degree or equivalent preferred/Foreign medical school graduate. If a House Physician, Bachelor's Degree or equivalent preferred. Must be a graduate of an Allopathic US Medical School or a school recognized or approved by the US Office of Education/Graduate of an Allopathic International Medical School.
  • Experience

    • Minimum of 2 years of prior PA/SA/House Physician experience.
