The SolidWorks Drafter / CAD Designer will support a developing manufacturing operation by creating accurate 3D models, fabrication drawings, and technical documentation for metal structures and components. This role requires strong drafting discipline, attention to detail, and the ability to establish consistent documentation practices that support manufacturing execution and scalability. The CAD Designer will collaborate with Project Management, production leadership, and shop teams to translate requirements into manufacturable designs.

Responsibilities:

CAD Modeling & Drafting

  • Create 3D models and 2D fabrication drawings in SolidWorks for structures, assemblies, and fabricated metal components.
  • Develop fabrication drawings, cut lists, BOMs, and other production documentation.

Process & Documentation Development

  • Establish drawing standards, templates, naming conventions, and basic revision control practices.
  • Build and maintain drawing libraries, model databases, and organized documentation files.

Production Support & Practical Engineering

  • Convert conceptual sketches, customer requirements, or verbal instructions into accurate manufacturing drawings.
  • Provide manufacturability guidance (DFM) through coordination with production staff and supervisors.
  • Update and revise drawings based on production feedback and shop-floor changes.

Manufacturing Integration

  • Generate CNC-ready files for laser cutting, plasma cutting, bending, and related processes as required.
  • Collaborate with production supervisors, welders, and fabricators to ensure accuracy, feasibility, and manufacturability.
  • Support prototype builds and help resolve shop-floor technical challenges.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve drawing clarity, reduce errors, and streamline manufacturability.

Requirements:

  • 2–3 years of SolidWorks experience in a manufacturing or metal fabrication environment.
  • Strong understanding of weldments, sheet metal, assemblies, and fabrication detailing.
  • Familiarity with fabrication processes (welding, bending, cutting, machining).
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and documentation discipline.
  • Ability to communicate in English or Spanish; bilingual preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office; familiarity with PDM systems is a plus.

Preferred Competencies

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, especially with production personnel.
  • Ability to manage multiple drawings/projects in a dynamic, evolving environment.
  • Problem-solving mindset with a focus on practical manufacturability.
  • Initiative to build and improve CAD workflows, standards, and libraries.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work in an environment where processes are being established

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; experience in mechanical drafting/design in manufacturing environments preferred.
  • Engineering degree is not required; if not held, technical training and/or relevant fabrication experience is preferred.
