The Vice President & Chief Operating Officer reports to the CEO and is a key member of the Executive Team. The COO represents BHM and BHSF in a strategic leader capacity and assists the BHM CEO in developing the vision, purpose and strategic direction for BHM and its Centers of Excellence. The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for providing direction in the management of FTE position control, annual operating budgets, capital budgets and the long range financial plan for the organization. The COO is responsible to lead and execute key strategic hospital wide initiatives to accelerate the hospital performance.  In the absence of the CEO, the Chief Operating Officer oversees the organization’s day-to-day operations and addresses all Corporate and Board related matters.

Ensures Effective Operations for the following areas: 

Surgical Services

  • Managing a 24 Operating Room Surgery Department, 16 Interventional Radiology Suites, 5 suite Advanced Therapeutic Intervention and Endoscopy Center, and Pain Management Center.  This includes Pre-Admission Testing, Central Sterilization, Anesthesia, and all other peri-operative departments. 

  • Serves as the administrative representative on the physician led Operating Room Collaborative Committee (ORCC).

     

Facilities, Life Safety and Security

  • Oversees the safety of the work and care environment as it relates to Facilities,  Life Safety and Emergency Preparedness, including hurricane or emergency situations of 17+ buildings  with >2M square feet under a/c. 

  • Manages the Security operations over a 100 acre campus and 17+ buildings to ensure the safety of our team members, patients, guests and visitors. 

 Imaging Services  

  • Manage the operations of all hospital based imaging services.  This includes 7 MRIs (Main, Intraop & MCVI locations), 6 CTs (Main, Intraop & MCVI locations), Ultrasound, PET, Nuclear Medicine, Xray, BHSF 3D reconstruction lab (system), Imaging Film Call Center (system), and Intraop Neuro Navigation Team. 

 Master Plan and Renovations:

  • Responsible for the management oversight of a $1.2 Billion dollar masterplan that includes new construction of buildings, renovations, aesthetics, wayfinding and sequencing of internal moves and coordination to ensure no interruption of patient care operations.

  • Works in collaboration with Strategic Planning and outside consultants on the development and execution of the campus master plan.   

  • In tandem with Construction Management sets timelines, sequencing of patient care internal moves and adjunct work to ensure life safety and safe work environments.

     

Service Line Integrator:

  • Collaborates with the Miami Cancer Institute, Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute to further the collaboration and integration with VPs on the execution of the institutes’ hospital based strategic needs. 

  • BHM Lead Executive with the Miami Neuroscience Institute VPs on the execution of the institutes’ hospital based strategic needs. 

  • Acts as the liaison for Surgeons and other physicians with patient care issues or concerns.

  • Oversees Robotic Surgical contracting and serves on the System wide Surgical Service Committee design to improve integration and standardization.

  • Participates on the Technology and Digital implements of system wide initiatives.  Currently Epic EMR and PAC’s development and implementations.

BHM Strategic Initiatives:

  • Leads key Hospital Strategic Initiatives such as:

  • Leading the design and development of the new Patient Care Tower.

  • Operationalizing the opening of the South Building Expansion (10 new ORs).

  • Establishing and executing operational impact plans for the 2026-2029 planned construction projects (Lake Pavilion, Keeley Pavillion, South Building expansion, New Bed Tower and Griffin Building).  

  • Development and mentoring  of AVP leaders.

  • Improvement plans leading to national Institute/Center of Excellence USNWR Rankings. 

  • Achieving CMS 5 Star and Leapfrog A

  • Oversight of BHM use of philanthropic gifts.

  • Supporting the launch and growth of GME programs.

The VP/COO is responsible for achieving and sustaining key financial indicators: operating revenue, operating margins, volumes, expense management and key quality and safety indicators, patient experience and employee engagement scores as well as adherence to all standards to meet the intent of regulatory and accreditation bodies. 

Attends and participates in all leadership committees and meetings including the BHM Board of Directors meeting, Performance Improvement Steering Committee and BHM Medical Executive Committee.  Serves as a liaison to the BHSF Foundation to assist in securing philanthropic gifts. 

Qualifications:


Required Education: Master’s Degree: Business, Health Services Administration 

10+ years of healthcare experience with last 3-5 years at the VP Level 

Position requires experience managing one or more business lines with broad knowledge in operations, business, finance, project management, quality and clinical care.  Must have ability to work with flexible hours including late evening meetings on a monthly basis.
