Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

 POSITION OVERVIEW

The Mine Rescue Team Specialist leads Pinto Valley’s emergency response and mine rescue readiness across surface mining and processing operations. This role coordinates emergency planning, training, and response for incidents involving heavy equipment, highwall instability, fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials, and confined spaces.

The Specialist maintains emergency response team readiness, ensures compliance with regulatory and company safety requirements, and serves in a leadership role during emergency incidents.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

• Emergency Response Leadership: Coordinate and lead mine emergency response operations using the Incident Command System (ICS). Serve as Incident Commander or senior response advisor during emergency situations.
• Emergency Planning: Develop, maintain, and implement site emergency response plans, procedures, and response protocols.
• Incident Review: Conduct incident debriefs and after-action reviews and track corrective actions to improve future response performance.
• Team Leadership & Development: Recruit, organize, and maintain qualified Mine Rescue and Emergency Response Team members.
• Training & Drills: Schedule and lead regular emergency response training, drills, and simulations based on site-specific risk scenarios.
• Certification Management: Ensure team members maintain required certifications such as First Aid, EMT, Fire Brigade, Confined Space Rescue, and HAZMAT.
• Equipment Readiness: Ensure inspection, testing, maintenance, and operational readiness of rescue, fire suppression, medical, and emergency communication equipment.
• Emergency Equipment Oversight: Coordinate inventories, testing schedules, and replacement planning for rescue equipment, emergency vehicles, and specialized response tools.
• Regulatory Compliance: Maintain compliance with MSHA regulations and applicable safety programs and voluntary assurance initiatives.
• Documentation & Records: Maintain accurate records of emergency training, drills, equipment inspections, and incident responses.
• Operational Coordination: Work closely with operations, maintenance, security, and site leadership to support emergency preparedness and response readiness.
• External Agency Coordination: Coordinate with local fire departments, EMS, hospitals, and law enforcement agencies for joint drills and emergency response support.
• Risk Assessment: Participate in hazard assessments and emergency risk evaluations related to mining and processing operations.
• Investigation Support: Provide input and support during investigations involving emergency incidents or response activities.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Required

• High school diploma or equivalent
 • Minimum 5 years of mining, industrial safety, or emergency response experience
 • Demonstrated leadership experience in emergency response or safety roles
 • Strong knowledge of surface mining hazards and heavy equipment operations
 • Ability to respond to site emergencies on an on-call basis
 • Valid driver’s license
 • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
 • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Emergency Management, or a related field
 • EMT, Paramedic, Firefighter, or Mine Rescue certification
 • Incident Command System (ICS) 100 / 200 / 300 training or equivalent
 • HAZMAT Operations or Technician certification
 • Experience in open-pit copper mining or mineral processing operations
 • Experience coordinating multi-agency emergency response drills

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Work in active surface mining and processing environments
 • Exposure to extreme weather conditions including heat, cold, and dust
 • Walking and working on uneven ground and around heavy equipment
 • Climbing ladders, stairs, and elevated work areas
 • Ability to lift and carry rescue equipment and emergency gear
 • Ability to wear PPE and emergency response gear for extended periods
 • May require confined space entry and work at heights
 • Combination of field-based work and administrative responsibilities
 • Participation in shift coverage, on-call rotations, and emergency response activities

All candidates will be required to complete a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol test, and background check. All positions require a pre-placement physical examination to ensure candidates are 'fit for duty’. Additional training and/or testing may be required. Capstone maintains a drug and alcohol-free workplace.
