Summary

Pharmacy Technician I works under the direct supervision of licensed pharmacists providing a high level of assistance in compounding (sterile and non-sterile preparations), distribution and dispensing of medication and other pharmaceutical related supplies.

Responsibilities

  • Replenishes automated drug distribution machines following a standard procedure established by policy. 
  • Troubleshoots for problems related to the operation of the automated drug distribution machines. 
  • Forwards concerns that can not be corrected to the appropriate individual in a timely manner. 
  • Prepares sterile products (add-a-vials, syringes, IV Admixtures, chemotherapy, large volume parenteral) following standard procedures established by policy and under the supervision, and check of a licensed pharmacist. 
  • Assures that all quality related procedures are followed. 
  • Inputs information into the Hospital's inpatient pharmacy clinical information management system as requested. 
  • For areas not served by point of care automated dispensing equipment, assures that required medications and supplies are dispensed following established procedures. 
  • Performs extemporaneously compounding and prepackaging under the guidelines of pharmacy policy, and under the supervision, and check of a licensed pharmacist. 
  • Orders and receives medication inventory; rotates stock and checks expiration dates routinely. 
  • Follows all established procedures to assure the quality and security of the medication assets. 
  • Maintains assigned area in a neat, clean, and orderly manner. 
  • Assembles, tabulates and analyzes quality improvement data when requested. 
  • Assists in reports and survey tabulation when requested. Performs monthly patient care center reviews, as assigned. 
  • Enters data into the computer system specialized to that activity. 
  • Attends appropriate orientation, continuing education, and training courses to maintain competency in job skills and knowledge. 
  • Participates in required educational programs, including HIS, safety, infection control, AIDS awareness, age-related special needs and behaviors, etc. 
  • Assures a pharmacist checks each preparation prior to it being dispensed.
  • Consults with a pharmacist or supervisor when necessary and as required by Florida Statutes, when making exceptions to a policy that would benefit the patient. Refers clinical questions to a pharmacist. 
  • Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise). 
  • Performs all other related job duties as assigned.

Experience

  • Generally requires 0 to 3 years of related experience.

Education

  • High School diploma is required.

Skill

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. 
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure. 
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions. Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications. 
  • Must meet and maintain current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the clinical area.

Credentials

  • Must hold a Registered Pharmacy Technician license (RPT) and be CPHT certified or hold a Pharmacist Intern license (PSI).
