Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Sr. Supervisor, Mine Operations provides leadership and direction for daily surface mining loading and hauling operations to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective production. This role oversees the Loading and Haulage Supervisors and their crews, manages daily and weekly service work compliance to plan, and ensures crews are appropriately resourced to drive consistently and performance in safe work execution.

Working closely with Mine Technical Services, Mine Operations, Crushing Operations, Mine Mobile Maintenance, Dispatch, and contractors, the Sr. Supervisor, Mine Operations is responsible for coordinating resources, optimizing loading and hauling performance, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving continuous improvement across the load-haul cycle.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leadership & Operations: Provide leadership and direction to Loading and Haulage Supervisors and crews to achieve production, ore grade, safety, and cost targets while promoting accountability and operational excellence.
  • Safety & Compliance: Ensure all loading and hauling work is performed in accordance with MSHA regulations, company policies, and standard operating procedures.
  • Team Leadership: Coach, mentor, and provide constructive feedback to supervisors and crew members while recognizing positive performance and reinforcing safe work practices; mentor and develop supervision.
  • Staffing & Resourcing: Ensure crews have proper talent levels and staffing, and that there are backup lead-people for each crew and supervisor position.
  • Production Coordination: Coordinate daily loading and hauling production activities with Loading and Haulage Supervisors to ensure equipment, personnel, and resources are deployed efficiently to meet operational objectives.
  • Equipment & Fleet Coordination: Collaborate with Mine Mobile Maintenance to monitor loading and haulage equipment condition and prioritize maintenance activities; utilize MineStar or a similar fleet management system to track fleet performance.
  • Dispatch Coordination: Work closely with Dispatch to minimize haul cycle delays and maximize loading and hauling equipment utilization.
  • Technical Collaboration: Partner with Technical Services to coordinate mine plans, loading and hauling sequencing, and operational improvements.
  • Budget Management: Ensure monthly spending falls in line with the budget and complete monthly reconciliation of actuals against budget.
  • Scheduling: Manage overtime scheduling; organize supervision, coverage, and vacations for salaried employees; be available on-call for their 7-day night shift rotation.
  • Incident Investigation: Lead incident investigations, including severity classification and 5-whys root cause analysis.
  • Fatigue Management: Conduct fatigue monitoring clip QA/QC.
  • Reporting & Documentation: Ensure daily operational reports are accurate, complete, and submitted in a timely manner.
  • Labor Relations: Support compliance with applicable collective bargaining agreements and company policies; work with HR on employee grievances or investigations.
  • Training & Development: Work with the Training Department to manage crew health and training.
  • Communication: Deliver the Wednesday Panel Start crew presentation.
  • Contractor Management: Coordinate and oversee contractor mining/projects activities to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with operational requirements.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Required

  • 10 to 15 years of mining experience, including previous leadership experience in surface mine loading and hauling operations.
  • Strong knowledge of open pit mining operations and the drill-blast-load-haul production sequence.
  • Experience coordinating loading, hauling, and mine production activities.
  • Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of surface mining loading and haulage equipment (shovels, loaders, haul trucks).
  • Experience with MineStar or a similar fleet management system.
  • Experience with SAP or a similar purchasing program.
  • Knowledge of lockout/tagout/tryout (LOTOTO) procedures.
  • MSHA Part 48 Surface Miner Training, or the ability to obtain and maintain required certification.
  • Valid Arizona Driver License and the ability to safely operate a vehicle in an active mining environment.
  • Proficient in radio communications and working safely around heavy mobile equipment.
  • Strong computer skills with Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).
  • Ability to speak, comprehend, read, and write English fluently.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, analytical, planning, and problem-solving skills; strong attention to detail and a proactive mindset.

Preferred

  • Prior experience in a copper operation is strongly preferred.
  • Experience supervising multiple Loading and Haulage Supervisors or operational work groups.
  • Experience with contractor-supported loading and hauling operations.
  • Experience with mine dispatch systems and production reporting.
  • Experience collaborating with Technical Services and Mine Mobile Maintenance.
  • Experience working in a unionized mining environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Work approximately 70% in the field and 30% in an office environment.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended durations, including walking up and down stairs, and across uneven ground in an active surface mining operation.
  • Ability to kneel, crawl, stoop, and squat, occasionally in confined spaces.
  • Frequently work around heavy mobile mining equipment and operating machinery.
  • Travel throughout the mine site in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Climb ladders, access equipment, and navigate elevated work areas as required.
  • Occasionally lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times in operational areas.
  • Work extended hours, rotating schedules, or respond to operational needs as required to support production objectives.

All candidates will be required to complete a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol test, and background check. All positions require a pre-placement physical examination to ensure candidates are 'fit for duty'. Additional training and/or testing may be required.
