Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

Capstone employees are eligible for an extensive total rewards package, designed to support your physical, mental, financial, and emotional well-being. This package includes, but is not limited to:

  • 401(k) Savings Plan – Eligible from day one. Employees may contribute up to 90% of eligible earnings, subject to IRS limits, with a dollar-for-dollar company match up to 6%, fully vested immediately.
  • Retirement Boost – The company contributes 8.5% of eligible earnings, increasing to 14.2% after the employee reaches the applicable Social Security wage base limit, with 100% immediate vesting.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Superintendent Mine Operations is accountable to lead and manage the production and development processes of the Mine, ensuring compliance with commitments related to the quantity, quality and opportunity established in the production programs, with the costs committed in the operating budget.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES 

    • Behaves in a way that demonstrates support of Capstone’s Vision and Values:
    • Manage and ensure all employees and contractors are working in compliance with all Pinto Valley Mine and MSHA safety guidelines and procedures and ensure critical controls and procedures are in place.
    • Manage and ensure that all employees and contractors are certified to execute the tasks/jobs they are assigned
    • Maintain department compliance with local, state, federal and company standards
    • Coach and mentor team member growth and development. Ensure professional learning objectives of department staff are met. Manage annual employee performance review process.
    • Manage the necessary coordination between the Geology, Geotechnics, Planning, Primary Crushing, Maintenance, and Concentrator work teams for the execution of mine processes. 
    • Define and ensure compliance with the performance standards that will determine the mine's extraction capacity. 
    • Ensure the proper execution of third-party service contracts.
    • Design and manage the operating and investment budget. 
    • Manage the implementation of Mine Management safety plans, identifying fatality risks and the respective controls. 
    • Manage and implement technological innovations in the area to optimize the production and safety process and maximize asset utilization. 
    • Manage the implementation of personnel development policies and plans in their area. 
    • Ensure the design, implementation, and compliance of the area's budget. 
    • Manage the implementation of continuous improvement plans.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mine engineering.
  • At least 10 - 15 years’ experience between Mine ops and mine engineering field. 
  • Demonstrate, at least, between 3 and 5 years of experience in Mine Ops and/or operational planning (Short term or scheduling)
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, SAP among others)
  • Strong project management and budgeting skills
  • Able to speak, comprehend, read, and write English.

Knowledge:

  • Extensive knowledge in Open pit process.
  • Mine planning understanding.
  • Drill and blast knowledge 
  • Experience leading Geotechnical groups.
  • Competent person for budgeting and project execution
  • Coaching, mentoring or team builder experience
  • Third-Party Service Management, 
  • Cost Control, 
  • SAP, Dispatch systems, and knowledge in planning software.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

50% of the time will be spent in the field while the remaining 50% will be spent in an office environment.

All candidates will be required to complete a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol test, and background check. All positions require a pre-placement physical examination to ensure candidates are 'fit for duty’. Additional training and/or testing may be required. Capstone maintains a drug and alcohol-free workplace.
