Position Summary:
The Shift Leader is responsible for supervising and coordinating the daily activities of production line staff to ensure efficient, high-quality manufacturing operations. The role involves overseeing production processes, maintaining safety and quality standards, and supporting team performance and development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise, lead, and coordinate a team of production operators or technicians.
- Ensure daily production targets and quality standards are met.
- Monitor workflow and adjust manpower or machine assignments as needed.
- Train and mentor team members on standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, and equipment usage.
- Enforce health and safety regulations and promote a safe working environment.
- Maintain accurate production records and prepare shift reports.
- Communicate effectively with other departments (maintenance, quality, logistics) to ensure smooth operations.
- Identify process inefficiencies and suggest improvements.
- Conduct regular team meetings and performance reviews.
- Ensure equipment and tools are properly maintained and calibrated.
- Support continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives.
- Reads blueprint schematics, manuals and other resource material to determine work procedures, faulty components and process of repair.
- Maintains quick access to critical component parts for each machine and piece of equipment.
- Calibrates, aligns and balances machines and equipment.
- Dismantles machines and equipment for repair or movement.
- Operates diagnostic and repair equipment in the performance of maintenance duties such as circuit testers, voltmeters, and other tools as required.
- Performs electrical and electronic repairs to the component or board level. May provide leadership to maintenance workers on special assignments.
- Assesses and recommends disposition on replacement or repair of equipment.
- Assembles machines and equipment.
- Performs preventive maintenance duties as scheduled on all equipment.
- Handles hazardous materials and liquids such that spills and leaks are prevented and all such materials are contained in compliance with EPA requirements.
- Carry out all practices and procedures in such a manner to achieve the accuracy, quality and production standards necessary in accordance with company policy. Employees should stop their production/work if suspect bad/poor quality parts and follow non-conforming parts procedure QS-216.
- Participates on safety committee.
- Monitors unscheduled machine downtime due to mechanical breakdown, electrical problems, wear and tear, etc.
- Maintain logs as required on downed machines, preventative maintenance schedules, purchase orders, and on maintenance performed daily.
- Perform various other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
Education:
- High school diploma or GED
Experience:
- Previous experience in manufacturing or production is an advantage
Skills and Competencies:
- Experience working under Lean Manufacturing or 5S principles
- Strong understanding of production processes, safety standards, and quality control
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities
- Proficient in using basic computer applications (MS Office, ERP systems).
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Manufacturing floor environment: exposure to noise, grease, heat, and moving machinery
- May require shift work, weekends, or overtime based on production demands
- PPE required (gloves, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, etc.)
- Ability to lift and carry up to [e.g., 25 lbs]
