POSITION SUMMARY

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) provides occupational therapy services to optimize patient health outcomes and the patient and family experience. Skilled patient intervention is provided under the supervision of the occupational therapist and in accordance with the plan of care. General and direct supervision will be provided consistent with regulatory guidelines and the COTA’s competency. COTA manages technical, environmental, and financial resources effectively. Documentation must be in accordance with professional and regulatory guidelines. This job description applies to both scheduled and per-diem COTA roles. Work schedules are determined to meet patient care needs and work may be required on weekends and holidays. The minimum scheduled role is 0.5 FTE and the minimum work expectation for a per-diem role is one (1) shift/month.


ESSENTIAL JOB KNOWLEDGE

  • Under the direction and supervision of the Occupational Therapist, the COTA provides treatment interventions to patients that are safe, timely, effective, efficient, patient-centered, and equitable, in compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Recognizes cultural factors that may impact treatment and plan of care and accesses appropriate resources to meet patient needs and maximize outcomes.
  • Follows appropriate strategies to educate patients so that the environmental constraints, learning barriers, and cultural factors are addressed effectively.
  • In collaboration with the supervising Physical Therapist, participates in making appropriate referrals to colleagues, medical specialists, and ancillary providers as needed.
  • Recognizes and incorporates safety procedures, precautions, and contraindications in the delivery of therapy services.
  • Contributes to establishment and/or modification of patient/family-centered goals and treatment plans that accurately reflect anticipated patient outcomes.
  • Utilizes resources and seeks appropriate assistance to incorporate evidence-based practice into clinical decision making.
  • Successfully completes initial and ongoing organizational and department education, training, and competency requirements.
  • Infection Control: Understands, demonstrates, and follows organizational infection control guidelines (CDIC).
  • Quality: Focuses on improving processes and champions efficiency in daily work activities.
  • Safety: Promotes a culture of safety by taking accountability for individual actions, including but not limited to, promptly reporting errors or near misses via the organization’s occurrence reporting system and participating in developing improved safety processes, as appropriate. (ADM015, ADM016, OPS044, Mission Statement).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


JOB REQUIREMENTS 

Licenses:

  • State of Wisconsin Driver’s License is required. 
  • State of Wisconsin Professional licensure for Occupational Therapy Assistant is required. 

Education:

  • Associate degree in Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant is required. 

Experience:

  • A minimum of one (1) year of recent experience as a licensed COTA is required. 
  • Experience and strong knowledge base in home health preferred.

Miscellaneous:

  • Familiarity with patient care processes and equipment specific to the COTA role is preferred.
  • CPR/BLS Certification required.
  • Valid Auto Insurance is required.
  • Reliable vehicle transportation is required.
