Location: Middletown, OH

Cleveland-Cliffs has an immediate opportunity for a Project Engineer within our Project Engineering department at our Middletown Works facility. This role is responsible for managing engineering projects from design and procurement through installation and start-up of new or modified equipment and facilities. The Project Engineer works closely with operations, maintenance, contractors, and external vendors to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget, while providing technical support, maintaining infrastructure standards, and driving continuous improvement across plant operations.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for engineering projects including specifications for design, procurement, installation, and start-up of new or modified equipment and facilities as assigned
  • Accurate and timely project completion through effective supervision of outside engineering firms, fabricators, suppliers, vendors, and labor contractors
  • Identifies process improvements and/or critical equipment/facility replacements as may be necessary for the facilities/processes to produce a quality and competitive commercial product
  • Assures that on-site work by the selected contractor(s) meets or exceeds the company requirements for workmanship and safety
  • Applies standard engineering and drafting techniques to a variety of operating and maintenance problems and in the development of a scope of work, budget estimation, providing direction to outside engineering firms in furnishing associated detailed design information for a successful installation and commissioning
  • Participates in technical investigations, studies, problem review, new and proposed equipment, materials, processes and facilities and provide sound engineering evaluations and recommendations for proposed actions
  • Collaborates with operating department management in prioritizing engineering services relative to department needs and objectives
  • Review submitted designs for adequacy in meeting desired project objectives, developing required specifications for equipment and installation, coordinating scheduling efforts, developing required operations/maintenance training programs, assist in field installation facility/equipment commissioning
  • Inspects the project site to check accuracy of layout drawings to avoid conflict with existing due to undocumented conditions
  • Inspects the progress of mechanical design and ensures that all drawings, records, and files are up-to-date
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An engineering degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil or Structural
  • Three years of technical related engineering experience in heavy manufacturing
  • Ability to evaluate and resolve problems, correctly focus the resources and make efficient decisions through the application of job know-how
  • Strong leadership, negotiation, interpersonal, and communications skills
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in development and implementation of Major Capital Projects in the steel industry.
  • Project Management Certification a plus and/or encouraged to be obtained.
