Job Description

 

Under the direct supervision of the Section Supervisor, obtains and prepares specimens for analysis and performs various screening tests. The Phlebotomist reports to the Section Supervisor and maintains a cooperative working relationship with patients, patients’ families, medical staff, and interdepartmental and intradepartmental personnel.

 

SHIFT AND SCHEDULE

Part Time/Nights, Part Time/Days, and Full Time/Days, Weekends/Holidays, On Call Required

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

  • Obtains blood specimens.
  • Checks the computer labels against the patient Midland Memorial Hospital (MMH) armband.
  • Verifies positive patient identification per MMH policy.
  •  Performs veni-puncture and capillary sticks using the aseptic technique and in accordance with department procedures. Observes hospital isolation procedures.
  • Follows Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute order of draw.
  • Ensures that specimen requirements are met at the time of collection and maintains specimen integrity.
  • Coordinates the collection of therapeutic drug-monitoring assays with nursing personnel to ensure the proper drug dose to collection time.
  • Coordinates special laboratory studies with nursing services (Adrenocorticotropic Hormone stimulation (ACTH) etc.) or pharmacy. Administers oral test solutions. (glucose tolerance)
  • Follows PPID procedure.
  • Is competent to draw all ages of patients from newborn to geriatric populations.
  • Accessions and processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing.
  • Labels specimens according to policy.
  • Verifies specimen integrity and adheres to established procedures for rejection of unacceptable specimens.
  • Answers telephone calls- reads laboratory results to satisfy inquires; records requests for blood collections; answers general questions concerning test orders and collection takes messages or routes calls to the appropriate laboratory employee or section.
  • Prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing.
  • Prepares test order in the ARUP computer.
  • Prepares specimen aliquots for dispatch according to specimen requirements.
  • Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the physician of the order, pathologist, nursing unit, or reference laboratory. Refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification before collecting samples or processing specimens. Makes the supervisor aware of unresolved orders.
  • Runs the computer work list to ensure that all orders have been processed.
  • Contributes to the general laboratory functions and MMH needs.
  • Attends regular department staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Maintains compliance with laboratory and hospital policies and procedures, as well as safety practices.
  • Keeps work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies.
  • Performs clerical functions associated with the designated laboratory section.
  • Helps maintain files pertinent to the laboratory section.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • No Experience required.
  • Certified in Phlebotomy preferred or eligible.
  • Must have valid driver license.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily. The individual must be able to: Stand, walk, sit, stoop, reach, lift, see, speak and hear. Lifting is limited to 35 lbs. for clinical staff and to 50 lbs. for non-clinical staff.
