Description

The Environmental Engineering Intern will support the Environmental Department at Milford Mining Company by assisting with environmental compliance, monitoring, and data management activities in a mining and mineral processing environment. This role provides hands-on experience working in an operating copper mine and processing facility, with exposure to environmental regulations, permitting, and field-based monitoring programs.


The intern will work closely with environmental professionals and operations personnel to help ensure compliance with federal and state environmental requirements, while gaining practical experience in areas such as water management, air quality, waste handling, and reclamation. This position combines fieldwork, data analysis, and administrative support in a dynamic industrial setting.


What You’ll Gain

Essential Functions

Environmental Monitoring & Field Support

  • Assist with environmental sampling programs, including water, soil, and air monitoring 
  • Support inspection of facilities such as leach pads, ponds, containment systems, and waste areas 
  • Participate in routine environmental compliance inspections and field observations 
  • Record field data accurately and maintain proper documentation of sampling activities 

Compliance & Reporting

  • Assist in maintaining compliance with environmental permits and regulatory requirements 
  • Support preparation of reports related to water quality, air emissions, and waste management 
  • Help track environmental data and ensure accurate recordkeeping for regulatory reporting 
  • Assist with document organization for inspections, audits, and regulatory reviews      

Data Management & Analysis

  • Enter and verify environmental data in spreadsheets or databases 
  • Assist with data analysis and trending to identify potential compliance or operational issues 
  • Support development of charts, summaries, and reports for internal use 

Environmental Programs Support

  • Assist with stormwater management, spill prevention, and waste management programs 
  • Support reclamation and land management activities, including vegetation monitoring and documentation 
  • Participate in environmental awareness and compliance initiatives across the site 

General Support

  • Maintain organized environmental files and records 
  • Support special projects and initiatives as assigned by the Environmental team 
  • Communicate effectively with team members regarding field observations and potential issues

Work Environment

This position operates in a combination of office and field environments within an active mining and mineral processing facility. The role requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, rain, and snow. The intern will be exposed to conditions typical of an industrial site, including dust, noise, chemicals, and uneven terrain. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times in designated areas.


Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand, walk, and work outdoors for extended periods 
  • Ability to navigate uneven terrain and climb stairs or access elevated areas 
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25–40 pounds occasionally 
  • Ability to safely perform field sampling and inspection activities 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a temporary internship position. Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, with flexibility based on school schedules and business needs. Some extended hours may be required for field activities or special projects.


Travel

Limited travel may be required within the site or to nearby facilities for sampling or monitoring activities.

Requirements

Required

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resources, Biology, or a related field 
  • Completion of at least sophomore-level coursework 
  • Basic understanding of environmental principles and regulations 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and general computer skills 
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills 
  • Ability to work safely in an industrial environment 

Preferred

  • Junior or Senior standing 
  • Coursework in environmental regulations, water quality, air quality, or waste management 
  • Prior internship or field experience in environmental or natural resource work 
  • Interest in mining, industrial operations, or environmental compliance
