Position Summary

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides hands-on support and assistance to individuals with developmental disabilities in their homes and communities. DSPs help individuals achieve greater independence, maintain their health and safety, and actively participate in community life.

This role requires compassion, professionalism, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently while following each individual's support plan.

Key Responsibilities

Direct Care & Personal Support

  • Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and meal preparation
  • Provide supervision, companionship, and emotional support
  • Support individuals in developing and maintaining independent living skills
  • Encourage personal choice, self-advocacy, and community participation
  • Assist with mobility, transfers, and physical support when necessary
Community Integration

  • Accompany individuals to appointments, recreational activities, shopping trips, and community events
  • Provide transportation as needed
  • Encourage social interaction and relationship-building opportunities
  • Support participation in hobbies, employment, volunteer work, and community programs
Household Support

  • Assist with light housekeeping and laundry
  • Help maintain a safe, clean, and organized living environment
  • Support meal planning and preparation
  • Assist with grocery shopping and other daily living tasks
Documentation & Compliance

  • Complete daily service documentation accurately and on time
  • Report incidents, concerns, or changes in condition promptly
  • Follow Individual Service Plans (ISPs) and Behavior Support Plans when applicable
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations
  • Follow all DODD, Medicaid, and Safe Haven Home Care policies and procedures
  • Participate in required training and continuing education
Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license
  • Reliable transportation and proof of insurance
  • Ability to pass state and federal background checks
  • Ability to use a smartphone or tablet for documentation
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and responsibly
  • Ability to assist with lifting, transfers, and physical support when required
  • CPR/First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain)
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities
  • Experience in healthcare, home care, education, behavioral health, or human services
  • Experience supporting individuals with behavioral challenges
  • Knowledge of person-centered planning principles
