SHIFT SUPERVISOR

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB: 

The Shift Supervisor is responsible for leading a unionized workforce during an assigned rotating shift at a 24/7 pharmaceutical glass tubing manufacturing facility. This role ensures that all safety, quality, and productivity objectives are met by effectively coordinating personnel, addressing production challenges, and maintaining open communication with both incoming and outgoing shifts. The Supervisor plays a key role in workforce management: including scheduling, payroll processing, and performance reviews. 

REPORTS TO: Production Manager

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 

  • Directs and coordinates the daily activities of the production workforce to meet established safety, quality, and productivity targets.
  • Promotes a workplace culture based on teamwork, communication, and accountability.
  • Communicates with supervisors across all shifts to ensure seamless hand-offs and operational continuity.
  • Collaborates with Production and Quality teams to prioritize production goals, resolve quality concerns, and manage machine or process issues.
  • Acts as the first line of response for addressing safety incidents, equipment breakdowns, and workforce challenges.
  • Coordinates daily and long-term scheduling to maintain coverage and adjust for absences or workload changes.
  • Maintains accurate payroll records and manages time and attendance using internal HRIS system.
  • Conducts employee performance evaluations, supports skill development, and ensures adequate cross-training within the team.
  • Handles employee relations issues through coaching, counseling, and conflict resolution.
  • Monitors shift performance metrics as well as production schedule to ensure efficient production and timely and efficient job changes.
  • Conducts or assists in workplace investigations to address and resolve workplace issues, ensuring adherence to company policies, the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and legal requirements. 
  • Supports root-cause analysis and corrective actions for quality or safety incidents.
  • Enforces compliance and exemplifies the behavior with all safety, health, environmental, company rules, and quality regulations (ISO and internal standards).
  • Maintains proper inventory and usage of materials to minimize waste and optimize throughput.
  • Follows the 4 C's outlined in the company policy - communication, commitment, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction.
  • Commits to the execution and evolution of continuous improvement and operational excellence objectives through process design, problem solving, knowledge sharing, and teaching others
  • Leader of teams, coach, teacher, trainer, and consultant to their assigned employee team(s.)
  • Facilitates improvement implementation through deployment of the Nipro OPEX model and works to involve everyone in the pursuit of sustained beneficial change
  • Sustain implementation through learn-by-doing methods, and provides leadership, coaching and training in OPEX processes to team members.
  • Focuses site teams on continuous improvement, by involving people in meeting productivity and site objectives
  • Supports site OPEX coordinators continuous improvement interventions and employee teams.
  • Ensures predicted improvements are made, measured, completed, and linked to operating results.
  • Participates in Best Practice sharing, assures Kaizen Team Events are recorded.
  • Identifies opportunities to implement common processes and best practices.

Verifies all team members follow standard work consistently to ensure efficiency and quality in the process.

SCHEDULE: 

8-hour rotating shifts: 12AM-8AM, 8AM-4PM, 4PM-12AM 

 

REQUIREMENTS: 

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate degree or some college coursework preferred.

Experience: 

  • 2–4 years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably with union workforce management.
  • Experience in glass manufacturing or similar industrial setting is strongly preferred.

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing metrics, quality systems, and lean tools (problem solving)
  • Solid organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; SAP knowledge is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop employees

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be available to work assigned shift and overtime as needed for supervisory coverage, including weekends or holidays.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and work in a hot or cold manufacturing environment for extended periods.   
  • The employee frequently is required to use hands and fingers, to handle or feel objects, and reach with hands and arms.  
  • The employee is required to lift, bend, twist, talk and hear.  
  • The employee must lift and/or move up to and including 35 pounds.  
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, far vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. 
  • Ability to hear, smell, see, and feel in order to identify machinery issues or glass defects

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is regularly exposed to working near moving mechanical parts/equipment, airborne dust, hot molten glass, airborne glass particulate. The employee is exposed to hot and cold weather conditions, risk of electrical shock.  The employee is frequently exposed to loud noise in the work environment.
