Paralegal
Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office
Hourly Pay Range $23.92 to $35.88

Job Summary: The Paralegal provides litigation and administrative support for the District Attorney’s Office. Areas of responsibility may include but are not limited to; legal research, working with case management systems, responding to open records requests and federal subpoena's, managing both physical and electronic incoming mail, compiling and publishing the bi-weekly office-wide newsletter, as well as other tasks as assigned.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Monitor the main the District Attorney mailbox as well as the search warrant and arrest warrant mailboxes. Distribute emails accordingly and complete work necessary for search and arrest warrants.
- Under supervision of the Deputy District attorney (Administration), process inquiries and draft replies to all public requests for records and federal subpoenas.     
- Compile and publish the bi-weekly newsletter of the office. This is to include articles both created and crowd sourced.
- Compile new hire paperwork, work with system partners to obtain access to building and IT equipment. Orientation for new hires and completing the on-boarding process.
- Upload documents related to new and on-going litigation of our cases. Maintain a spreadsheet of cases that require attention.
- Work with office travel agency, police department for the arrangement of travel regarding extraditions, detainers, and non-employee travel.
- Working with discovery paralegals through the office to ensure appropriate billing for discovery.
- Other duties as assigned by the elected DA, Chief Deputy DA and Admin Deputy DA.

Minimum Requirements & Education:
- Must be a current resident of the United States
- Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies and 3 years of experience working in Criminal Justice and/or Public Records experience
- Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice or Legal field and three (3) years’ experience working in Criminal Justice and/or Public Records experience
- Current Notary or eligible to obtain Notary during employment
Preferred Experience:
- Bachelor's degree
- Working knowledge of CCAP 
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel
- Knowledge of the Milwaukee County Criminal Justice System
- Motivated to increase efficiencies of the office and processes

Please Note: Depending on work demands and supervisor approval, this position is eligible to work remotely 20% of the time.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of Wisconsin statutes and case law; knowledge of, including legal requirements and procedures for filing petitions and other pleadings; knowledge of legal research methods; interviewing skills; analytical skills; organizational skills; ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, and to prepare thorough, accurate, and grammatically correct reports; proficiency in word processing, database and spreadsheet applications, especially Microsoft Word and Excel; ability to plan, assign, and coordinate work on complex tasks, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team on complex tasks; ability to perform various functions in the CCAP, computer system; ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion with cases. The ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 20Lbs.
