This person is responsible for CNC operations (Lathe or Mill). This position is located at Picatinny Arsenal.  

 

 

What will you be doing? 

 

This position will be a key member of the Prototype Engineering team.  Duties include: 

 

  • Technician to work CNC operations (Lathe or Mill)
  • Interpreting blueprints, process sheets, and setup docs to prepare the machine. This includes mounting workholding devices like chucks, jaws, and collets (for lathes) or vises and fixtures (for mills)
  • Selecting the correct cutting tools (inserts, drills, end mills, boring bars). They load them into the turret or carousel and set tool height, length, and diameter offsets
  • Finding and setting the part home/origin (X, Y, Z axes) using edge finders, indicators, or machine probes
  • Be able to complete in-process inspections in open setup (mics, calipers, thread measurements) and optical comparator (angles and overlays)
  • Running "dry runs" (air cuts) or single-block executions on new setups to ensure there are no machine crashes or tool interference
  • Making minor edits to G-code/M-code at the controller (such as adjusting feed rates, speeds, or depth of cut) to optimize the machining process or compensate for material hardness
  • Monitoring tool wear and making precise wear offset adjustments to keep parts within blueprint tolerances as tools degrade
  • Reading and interpreting complex geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) symbols
  • Using advanced precision measuring tools—including micrometers (inside, outside, depth), vernier calipers, bore gauges, thread plug gauges, and shadowgraphs—to inspect parts during production runs
  • Machining the first part of a batch to perfection before switching the machine into full production mode
  • Identifying the root cause of machining issues, such as poor surface finish, chatter, dimensional drift, or premature tool chipping
  • Performing daily preventative maintenance on the machine, including checking oil levels, monitoring coolant concentration, and cleaning chips from critical way-covers
  • Basic computer skills to enter inspection data, JobBOSS, etc.

  • Work and communicate well with a team of Engineers and Technicians to efficiently complete assigned tasks

 

What skills will the ideal candidate have to be successful? 

 

This position will require the following skillsets and experience: 

 


  • Must be able to obtain a clearance through the DoD security background investigation process

  • Experience: 4–8 years of experience operating CNC machinery
  • Looking for independently capable (work experience can vary if the applicant is proficient)
  • Pass drug and alcohol testing
  • Must have good mechanical skills and experience
  • High standard of quality and efficiency
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Any other MFG experience would be beneficial
  • Solid knowledge of shop mathematics
  • Must be a team player, able to multitask and prioritize accordingly
  • Basic PC knowledge (MS Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Must be able to work in a physical capacity, lifting and moving heavy object
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to obtain a government driver’s license
  • High School diploma required, College degree not required but beneficial
