Prepares, processes, embeds, cuts, coverslips, stains and mounts tissue specimens for evaluation and examination by the pathologist. Performs special staining procedures, including IHC on tissue and quality control slides as requested.

Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities:
•    Prepare, process, embed, cut, coverslip, stain and mount tissue specimens for evaluation and   examination by the pathologist.
•    Perform special staining procedures, including IHC on tissue and quality control slides as requested.
•    Accession specimens for Pathology and Cytology in the computer.
•    Communicate with appropriate provider regarding specimen problems
•    Prepare GYN and Non-GYN cytology specimens and order molecular studies
•    Perform routine maintenance of equipment and instruments and keep appropriate records.
•    Maintain inventory, communicate ordering needs to Clinical Specialist
•    Maintain work area in a clean and safe manner.
•    Attend laboratory meetings, in-service education meetings and educational seminars as requested.
•    Pick up specimens regularly from all areas of hospital.
•    Perform frozen sections.
•    Train both new employees and intern staff in assigned area of expertise.
•    Dispose of specimens in correct manner.
•    Dispose of hazardous chemicals in a safe and appropriate manner.

Education/Experience Required:
•    HS Diploma
•    A.S. Degree preferred

Registration/Certification:
•    HT(ASCP) certified or Bachelor's degree (meeting CAP HT minimums for credit distribution) with pathology lab experience and successful completion of histology test at time of interview and 
•    Successful completion of histology certification within 18 months of hire.


Physical/Environmental Requirements
This job requires frequent bending, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, walking and lifting over 10 lbs. There will be occasional need for climbing stairs, lifting in excess of 50 – 100 lbs and sitting. Constant use of hearing, sight and speech. Frequent use of smell and touch. Frequent keyboard and telephone use. Constant concentration and problem solving.

 

 

Pay Range:

$28.90 - $54.80

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time.  The pay range for this position is established and governed by the terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Employees hired into this position will receive compensation consistent with the terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
