About the role
The individual hired for this position will be joining a hardworking and dedicated team of scientists and engineers, and will facilitate experiments to generate new magnetic nano-powders and magnets at the cutting edge of magnetic performance. This individual will operate process equipment for the gas-phase reactions of powdered nanomaterials, process these powders to produce prototype magnets, and contribute to characterizing the properties and performance of these materials.
- Conduct gas-phase reactions on nano-powders to support R&D efforts for the next generation of iron nitride magnets
- Use materials characterization equipment to analyze and characterize samples in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Managing experiment scheduling and resource planning
- Help facilitate an active partnership between R&D and pilot teams
- Development work with non-routine assignments such as design of fixtures for experimental set-up, new experimental processes and establishing proper data acquisition
- Common chemistry lab and chemical hygiene protocols must be followed as the role requires using hazardous materials and lab and pilot machinery
- Maintain and update standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Collect and report accurate scientific and engineering data obtained from laboratory equipment and tools using electronic lab notebooks (ELNs)
- Maintain and clean laboratory work environment and equipment; submit lab supplies for procurement as needed
- Help install new equipment and troubleshoot current equipment and instruments
- Work with a high degree of attention to workplace safety
What we’re looking for:
- Minimum technical 2-year degree in a scientific field (physics, chemistry, materials, etc.), or 5+ years of experience in an industrial or scientific lab environment
- Excellent hands-on lab skills, eye for detail and ability to operate lab equipment
- Highly collaborative, enjoys working within a diverse team environment
- Strong interpersonal communication, prioritization, and organizational skills
- Strong sense of responsibility and get-it-done attitude
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry maneuver or carry heavy equipment, such as gas cylinders, where possible via the safe use of wheelcarts up to 50 lb.
- Ability to follow directions and meet deadlines
Preferred Qualifications:
- Wet chemistry experience
- Experience working hands-on with nanoparticles, nanomaterials or powders in a laboratory environment
- Experience with fluidized bed reactors
- Experience working in a glovebox handling pyrophoric/air-sensitive materials
- Wet chemistry experience
- Experience using electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) or laboratory inventory management systems (LIMS)
- Experience with ISO in a manufacturing environment with understanding of the importance of following standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Academic and/or industry experience working with advanced materials
