Position Overview

The Lab/Radiology Unit Clerk supports the overall operations of both Laboratory and Radiology services by coordinating scheduling, financial processes, billing workflows, and administrative duties. This position works closely with patients, radiology staff, laboratory staff, coding, and billing teams to ensure accurate documentation, authorization, and reimbursement for services. The role requires exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, communication skills, and an understanding of healthcare financial and insurance processes.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Radiology Operations
    • Schedule radiology exams and procedures in accordance with departmental guidelines and protocols.
    • Coordinate and obtain prior authorizations for radiology services with insurance payers.
    • Communicate exam preparation instructions and relevant appointment information to patients and ordering providers.
    • Provide financial counseling for radiology procedures, including insurance benefit verification and cost estimates.
    • Collaborate with radiology technologists and providers to maintain accurate and efficient scheduling workflows.
  • Laboratory & Radiology Billing Support
    • Work closely with coding and billing teams to resolve claim denials, coding issues, and documentation discrepancies related to laboratory and radiology services.
    • Provide billing oversight for reference laboratory services, including tracking send-out tests, reviewing charges, and ensuring accuracy prior to claim submission.
    • Ensure required forms, documentation, and coding information are complete and accurate for all lab and radiology orders.
  • Administrative & Customer Service
    • Assist patients, providers, and staff with questions related to scheduling, authorizations, and billing.
    • Maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
    • Update and verify patient demographic and insurance information as needed.
    • Perform general clerical duties including answering phones, faxing, scanning, chart maintenance, and routing documentation.
    • Support departmental workflows to promote timely patient care and operational efficiency.

Requirements, Knowledge/Skills and Abilities

  • Education & Experience
    • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
    • Previous experience in healthcare administration, billing, scheduling, or clerical support preferred.
  • Skills & Competencies
    • Knowledge of medical terminology, insurance processes, and prior authorization workflows.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
    • Customer-focused approach with the ability to interact professionally with patients and staff.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Standard office environment within clinical departments.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, computer use, and telephone communication required.
