OverviewÂ
The Maintenance Associate II is part of the Garden’s Facilities team, reporting to the Facilities Manager. This position performs maintenance to the Garden’s buildings, hardscapes and equipment, and in doing so, helps provide a safe, functional, and beautiful place for our visitors, staff and volunteers. They work from a prioritized list of tasks created by the Facilities Manager, often working independently to complete maintenance tasks and repairs on schedule. Tasks range from changing water and air filters on a regular schedule, to minor electrical repairs, to assisting with larger building renovations and upgrades.Â
General knowledge of building and equipment maintenance and repair is a must. Demonstrated proficiency in one or more of the building trades such as carpentry, plumbing or electrical is very desirable. Candidates must be able to understand projects that involve multiple complex steps and be able to independently move the project forward with minimal direction.Â
This is a full-time (40 hours per week), non-exempt position that reports to the Facilities Manager.Â
Essential DutiesÂ
- Perform repairs on buildings, grounds and equipment, as directed by the Facilities Manager Â
- Complete routine maintenance tasks on a regular scheduleÂ
- Respond to requests for immediate assistance from staff as neededÂ
- Assist Facilities and Horticulture staff with larger projects and installations as neededÂ
- Manage mid-sized projects and installations, acting as the foreman on projects involving multiple staffÂ
- Assist in managing contractors brought in to work on larger repairs Â
- Help direct volunteers who work alongside the Facilities teamÂ
- Help set up and take down special events and educational displaysÂ
- Assist the Facilities Technician with minor repairs and maintenance of vehicles, golf carts, and other equipment.Â
- Maintain organization of maintenance tools and supplies as part of routine operationÂ
- Monitor public restrooms on busy days and clean as neededÂ
- Help close the Garden at the end of the day on a rotating scheduleÂ
Knowledge & AbilitiesÂ
- Work well with coworkers, cooperate in a team environment, and maintain professional interactions with Garden staff, visitors and volunteersÂ
- Able to work weekend shifts, as requiredÂ
- Able to manage time and work under pressure to meet deadlines and prioritiesÂ
Qualifications & ExperienceÂ
- 3 years' experience in the building trades or related work (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, etc.)Â
Certificates & LicensesÂ
- Must have valid California driver license and maintain an acceptable driving recordÂ
Must be capable of strenuous physical work includingÂ
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time, lift and carry 75 lbs., bend, squat, and walk the SBBG trails.Â
- Tolerance of an outdoor work environment including exposure to outdoor environmental conditions, including extreme temperature fluctuations, rain, dust, allergens, poison oak, insects, small wild animals, and sun exposureÂ
