Port of Mobile Day Laborer

Location: Port of Mobile, Alabama
Position Type: Full-Time, Part-Time, Temporary, and On-Call Opportunities Available
Reports To: Port Operations Manager

Pay will range from $15/hr-$17/hr for General Labor positions, depending on the client

Position Summary

The Port of Mobile Day Laborer performs general labor duties in support of vessel operations, cargo handling, terminal activities, warehouse operations, and other maritime-related functions. This position requires working in a fast-paced industrial environment where safety, reliability, and teamwork are essential. Employees may be assigned to various tasks based on operational needs and vessel schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.

Successful candidates must possess a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card and be eligible to obtain all required terminal, dock, and facility access badges.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Cargo and Vessel Operations

  • Load, unload, and secure cargo from vessels, barges, trucks, and railcars.
  • Assist with the movement of materials, equipment, and supplies throughout port facilities.
  • Perform lashing, unlashing, and cargo-securing duties as assigned.
  • Assist stevedore crews and terminal personnel during vessel loading and discharge operations.
  • Operate hand tools and equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks.

Terminal and Warehouse Support

  • Perform general housekeeping and maintenance of work areas.
  • Assist with inventory movement, staging, and storage activities.
  • Sweep, clean, and maintain warehouses, docks, and terminal facilities.
  • Assist with cargo inspections and documentation processes as directed.

Safety and Compliance

  • Comply with all federal, state, local, maritime, and company safety regulations.
  • Adhere to OSHA, USCG, DHS, TSA, and terminal-specific security requirements.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and emergency response drills.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, injuries, or security concerns.

General Labor Functions

  • Lift, carry, push, pull, and move materials and equipment.
  • Assist with setup and breakdown of operational areas.
  • Perform other labor-related duties as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred but not mandatory.
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card required.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain all required Port of Mobile, terminal, customer, and dock access badges.
  • Ability to pass random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with company policy and applicable maritime regulations.
  • Ability to pass criminal background screening consistent with facility access requirements.
  • Reliable transportation to and from assigned work locations.
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 75 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, crouch, and reach for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, cold, and direct sunlight.
  • Ability to safely navigate industrial and maritime environments, including vessels, docks, gangways, warehouses, and cargo yards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous port, dock, warehouse, shipyard, construction, industrial, logistics, or maritime experience.
  • Experience working around heavy equipment and cargo operations.
  • Forklift, skid steer, or industrial equipment experience.
  • Knowledge of general maritime safety practices.

Work Environment

This position is performed in an active maritime and industrial environment. Employees may be exposed to moving machinery, vessel operations, heavy equipment, elevated work surfaces, varying weather conditions, dust, noise, and other conditions commonly associated with port operations.

Work schedules are driven by vessel arrivals, customer demands, and operational requirements. Employees should expect fluctuating start times and mandatory overtime when operationally necessary.
