Responsibilities

  • Assists the oncology physicians in the medical management of outpatients in the Hematology/Oncology clinic
  • Mixes chemotherapy as ordered by the physicians
  • Administers chemotherapy as ordered by the physicians
  • Assists in obtaining appropriate pre and post labs for treatment and evaluation of patients
  • Implements teaching strategies related to the education of patients and families regarding illness, therapy and home care on an outpatient basis to include distribution of pamphlets and handouts
  • Maintains familiarity with current methods of treating patients by both state of the art and investigational means through in-services
  • Interacts by phone, letter, or in person with pharmaceutical companies and other agencies in the procurement of medications for indigent patients
  • Interacts with physicians, patients and staff in a professional manner
  • Maintains inventories of chemotherapy drugs and supplies
  • Orders chemotherapy drugs and supplies for restocking
  • Stays abreast of the cost for chemotherapy drugs and supplies
  • Participates in direct patient care activities
  • Assists physicians with patient examinations, lumbar punctures, biopsies and bone marrow procedures performed in the clinic
  • Dispenses medications and administers injections according to orders to include controlled substances
  • Performs various routine tests to include urinalysis and catheterization
  • Maintains accurate patient records in chemotherapy area
  • Interacts with patients by telephone or in person in a professional manner
  • Ensures that staff are following established policies and procedures in returning calls in a timely manner
  • Schedules and pre-certifies tests and procedures and explains to patients, reviews incoming lab reports and other diagnostic reports and advises physicians of any abnormalities
  • Calls prescriptions to pharmacies as ordered by the physician
  • Schedules appointments for patients with other physicians and departments, as requested by physician
  • Ensures compliance with OSHA and Risk Management in collaboration with the Manager, Clinical Operations
  • Completes all mandatory department, educational and hospital requirements
  • Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards
  • Regular and prompt attendance
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required
  • Related duties as assigned

Additional Information

Employees must be in a regular position, working 20 hours or more per week (.50 FTE or greater) to qualify for benefits.


Qualifications

    • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing meeting the minimum standards set by the state of Alabama Required
    • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) for Alabama Upon Hire Required
    • Certification to administer Chemotherapy within 90 Days Required
    • Comparable combination of education and experience may substitute for the above requirements.
