Position Summary:

This role oversees daily production activities within the Overlay department ensuring high‑quality workmanship, efficient workflow, and a safe working environment. This role combines hands‑on technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, guiding a team of builders through the complete fabrication, assembly, and finishing process for residential and commercial garage doors.

 

The Team Lead coordinates work assignments, monitors production targets, and supports continuous improvement efforts to enhance quality, reduce waste, and maintain consistent output. This position serves as the primary point of contact between production staff and management, communicating priorities, resolving issues on the floor, and ensuring adherence to company standards, specifications, and safety protocols.

 

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong mechanical aptitude, problem‑solving ability, and the leadership skills needed to coach, train, and motivate team members while maintaining a positive, productive work environment.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Team Leadership & Daily Operations

  1. Lead, assign, and coordinate daily activities of Overlay team members to ensure safe and efficient and high-quality assembly operations.
  2. Monitor workflow to maintain on-time completion of door panels, frames, hardware installation, and final assembly.
  3. Provide hands-on support during peak production periods, complex builds, or staffing shortages.
  4. Communicate daily priorities, production goals, and performance expectations to team members.
  5. Serve as the first point of contact for employee questions, concerns, and issue resolution.

Production, Materials & Assembly Management

  1. Ensure materials are staged, organized, and available to support uninterrupted production flow.
  2. Verify that all assembly steps meet engineering specifications, quality standards, and customer requirements.
  3. Assist with monitoring material usage and report shortages, defects, or discrepancies.
  4. Support coordination with inventory, shipping, and maintenance teams to resolve material or equipment issues.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

  1. Enforce company safety policies and warehouse procedures.
  2. Promote safe work practices, including proper equipment use and housekeeping standards.
  3. Ensure compliance with OSHA and internal safety requirements.
  4. Address unsafe behaviors or conditions promptly and escalate concerns when necessary.
  5. Maintain a clean, organized, and audit-ready production environment.

Performance & Continuous Improvement

  1. Monitor team productivity, accuracy, and output quality; maintain daily performance metrics.
  2. Provide coaching, feedback, and support to improve individual and team performance.
  3. Assist with training and onboarding of new builders and cross‑training existing team members.
  4. Identify opportunities to improve assembly processes, reduce waste, and enhance efficiency.
  5. Support implementation of Lean, 5S, and other continuous improvement initiatives.

General Responsibilities

  1. Operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and material‑handling equipment as required.
  2. Assist with scheduling labor coverage to meet production demands.
  3. Communicate effectively with supervisors, engineering, quality, and cross‑functional teams.
  4. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

 

Position Requirements:

  1. High School Diploma or GED required.
  2. 1–3 years of experience in manufacturing, assembly, or a related production environment.
  3. Demonstrated ability to read and interpret work orders, diagrams, and basic technical drawings.
  4. Strong analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills with the ability to work independently. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  5. Continuous learner with a focus on adaptability and process improvement.
  6. Willingness to be visible on the shop floor and engage with team members daily.
  7. Effective communication and interpersonal skills to support cross-functional collaboration.
  8. Performs other related duties as assigned by leadership.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  1. Experience with mechanical assembly, hand tools, and power tools.
  2. Prior manufacturing floor experience.
  3. Experience leading or mentoring teams.

 

Other Job Responsibilities and Physical Requirements:

 

  1. Ability to lift up to 45 lbs. unassisted with or without reasonable accommodation.
  2. Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull materials weighing more than 45 lbs. using team lifting procedures.
  3. Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods (8–12 hours per shift).
  4. Ability to safely move throughout the manufacturing floor.
  5. Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, climb stairs and/or ladders as required for job tasks.
  6. Ability to use hands, wrists, and fingers for handling materials, writing, and computer work.
  7. Frequent use of computers, keyboards, tablets, scanners, or handheld devices.
  8. Ability to work in a loud, fast-paced industrial environment.
  9. Ability to work in hot and cold environmental conditions.
