Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Manager of Fleet Services, the Automotive Mechanic inspects, maintains, diagnoses, and repairs various types of motor vehicles, including their components, systems, accessories, and equipment. The Automotive Mechanic performs other related work requiring technical competency.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • In a garage and/or in the field, maintain and repair gasoline, diesel and other fuel-powered motor vehicles and equipment and perform mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, buses, trucks, tractors, bulldozers, golf carts, grounds maintenance equipment, motorcycles, graders, mechanical shovels, power mowers, snowplows, spreaders, rollers, compressors, pumps, jacks, and miscellaneous shop equipment, tools, and accessories.

  • Inspect vehicles and equipment to ensure their proper function. Diagnose malfunctions when vehicles and other equipment are not working properly and take appropriate corrective action. Use test equipment to determine and perform needed maintenance and repairs. Perform minor repairs to fenders and other body parts.

  • Perform adjustments on motor vehicle equipment and their assemblies to conform to maintenance manual specifications, including, but not limited to, valves, ignition systems, brakes, and clutches.

  • Perform preventive maintenance on motor vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to inspection of safety items, checking for deficiencies, tune-ups, oil changes lubrication, filter changes, spark plug and point replacement in a timely manner as recommended by the vehicle or equipment manufacturer.

  • Participate in training to expand knowledge base to include new technologies, including but not limited to vehicles and equipment running on alternative fuels, computerized diagnosis and testing methods, computerized parts and systems.

  • Comply with occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations and orders.  Understand and follow all safety rules and precautions, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment at all times when necessary. Participate in training activities as directed and/or assigned.

  • Ensure that all lubricants and fluids are at adequate levels for the proper functioning of all vehicles and equipment in the University fleet.

  • Provide maintenance and repair cost estimates as required.

  • Transport or coordinate the transport of malfunctioning vehicles to appropriate repair site.

  • Obtain, store, record, safeguard equipment, materials, parts and other supplies, maintain shop and work area in a clean and organized manner. Operate and maintain University tools, assets, and equipment in proper repair and working order in accordance with established standards and procedures.

  • Prepare reports and record of time spent, materials and parts used, work order requests, job status, and proposed or completed projects, and work completed accurately and on a timely basis, using both paper and computer system inputting as directed.

  • Work independently at times with supervision limited to reviews of the mechanic's progress and quality of work.

  • Communicate with customers to provide essential information, responding in a timely manner to requests for information. Proactively communicate information and issues to customers.

  • Utilize various types of information systems used by the institution, the division, the department, and related units (databases, handheld devices, cell phones, e-mail).

  • Perform clerical and/or administrative duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  • Successful completion of one (1) year of training in automotive technology at an accredited community college or vocational school.

  • Two (2) years of experience as a mechanic in the repair and installation of motors and the maintenance and repair of motorized vehicles and equipment. Applicants who do not possess the required year of formal training may substitute one (1) additional year of experience as outlined above.

  • Knowledge of automotive tools and equipment; methods, materials (including manuals, wiring and other diagrams and schematics), tools, standard practices, safety precautions and hazards of the trade.

  • Ability to inspect inoperative motor vehicles and equipment, diagnose the cause of malfunction, and perform repairs to operationally restore the motor vehicles or equipment.

  • Appointees must possess or gain within six (6) months, a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B Driver's license issued by the New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles. Appointees must possess the applicable endorsements (passenger and air brake endorsement) for the class and type of vehicle being operated.

  • Ability to remain in a standing position for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to lift arms above shoulder level to install and remove auto parts.

  • Ability to bend or stoop repeatedly over time to work on equipment.

  • Ability to move objects weighing more than 50 pounds distances of 20 feet or less.

  • Availability to work any shift, overtime, and holidays.

PREFERRED:

  • Accreditation from the Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

  • Experience servicing Air Brakes.

*NOTE: This is a Civil Service position.  As required by the State of New Jersey, in order to be certified to the position and attain permanent status in title, candidates are subject to an examination process and successful completion of a 4-Month Working Test Period.

This position is designated as essential. The designation of essential requires employees at these 24/7 facilities to be present due to inclement weather situations. This position requires on campus work and is not a position that allows remote work.

SALARY RANGE: C17: $52,824.07- $76,833.87 *NOTE: Salaries for internal candidates are determined by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission’s formula. Salaries for external candidates are determined up to step four, $60,027.01.
