Performs under the scope of practice of the Alabama State Board of Respiratory; Therapy Chapter 798-X-4.  Student Respiratory therapists are covered by Student Exemption from Licensure while employed 798-x-5-.14.  Student status is verified with program director and students operate under direct clinical supervision as defined in the Licensure Rules as:

 

Direct clinical supervision: A situation where a licensed respiratory therapist or physician is available for the purpose of communication, consultation, and assistance.

 

Performs respiratory therapy procedures that they have received academic program training for including but not limited to: Patient assessment and diagnostics; Oxygen administration and titration; aerosol therapies; medication delivery; lung clearing treatment modalities; adult non-invasive and invasive ventilation; infant and pediatric ventilation; arterial blood gas collection and analysis; bedside spirometry; removal and collection of body fluids in the airway; maintaining the natural airway; trach change outs;  other special procedures with training as assigned.   Records all procedures in the appropriate patient records; Assists with quality improvement initiatives.  Maintains and cleans equipment as needed.  Function as a member of the Code and Ice teams.

Qualifications
  1. Education:   Currently enrollment in AMA-approved respiratory care education program at Senior level.
  2. Experience: One year of AMA approved respiratory therapy education and/or student in senior year
  3. Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations: BLS required  
  4. Equipment/Tools/Work Aids: Personal Stethoscope and all equipment utilized in Respiratory Care.
  5. Specialized Skills: Computer skills required for use of Hospital Information System.
  6. Physical Requirements: Standing and walking for long periods of time, bending, lifting, climbing stairs, maneuvering heavy rolling equipment long distances, assisting hospital staff in positioning and moving patients.
