Job Classification: Staff, 12 Month, Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Report to:  Housekeeping Supervisor

Summary

Performs custodial duties, minor maintenance and other miscellaneous duties in order to ensure that campus buildings and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner.

Example of Duties:

• Clean and care for assigned area(s) ensuring healthy and sanitary buildings for students, faculty and staff. Specific activities include:
  • Clean offices, meeting rooms, recreational spaces and dormitories
  • Clean and disinfect all restrooms including floors, sinks, mirrors, and toilets. Replenish toilet tissue, paper towels,  and soap.
  • Sweep and mop all floor surfaces.
  • Dust all furniture and fixtures.
  • Clean entrance and exit glass, doors and hardware. Clean office and dorm windows.
  • Vacuum carpets.
  • Sweep outside porches and sidewalks.
  • Empty all waste baskets and garbage cans and remove to outside areas.
  • Report minor maintenance repairs.
  • Spot clean walls and toilet partitions.
• Maintain storage areas and cleaning equipment, materials, and supplies in a safe and orderly manner .
  • Secure storage areas
  • Ensure cleaning materials and supplies are stored in a safe manner.
  • Maintain and adequate supply of cleaning materials and supplies.
  • Restock materials and supplies.
  • Make note of the need for equipment repairs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Must be able to bend, stoop, occasional lifting with assistance, walk up multiple steps, climb a ladder for inside use, mop, sweep, and use all cleaning devices (i.e. vacuums, wet and dry mops, brooms, etc. 
• Will occasionally need to be able to move student furniture (with aid of another person) such as bed frames, mattresses, student desks, etc. for cleaning purposes.
• Need to be able to carry full trash bags from the buildings to outside pick up areas.
• Must be able to work independently with little supervision. 
• During the summer, buildings are cleaned by groups of custodians and it is necessary that individuals be able to work within a team environment.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school graduate or GED.
• Must have basic knowledge of general housekeeping skills.
• Any equivalent combination of experience, training, and/or education approved by Human Resources.

• Environment: Work is performed in mostly indoor environments but may also be required to travel from site to site; exposure to dangerous and potentially toxic cleaning products that can be harmful. May be required to clean up blood, saliva, and other bodily fluids.
• Physical: This position is physically demanding.  Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to walk and/or stand for the entire working shift.  The incumbent will be required to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch,, climb, reach, twist, grasp, and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to climb unusual heights on ladders and lifts; to lift up to 50 lbs., carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight such as full trash bags and medium weight cleaning equipment such as floor buffers; sufficient manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination to operate cleaning machines and tools; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. 
• Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction. 
• Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
