Description:  
The Sterile Processing Technician independently performs core sterile processing functions.  Decontamination, preparation, sterilization and distribution of surgical instruments and equipment throughout the surgery center, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process.

Responsibilities:
  • Operates all required equipment and machinery accurately and safely, prepares, assembles, and sterilizes instruments and supplies according to parameters of sterilization in accordance with The Department of Health, CMS, OSHA, CDC, AAMI and AORN standards. 
  • Maintains appropriate records, and monitors quality control and infection control standards. 
  • Provides asset management and support of surgical instruments and trays belonging to or consigned to the facility.
  • Knowledge of processes, procedures, quality assurance, chemicals and medical instruments sufficient to be able to decontaminate and sterilize equipment, supplies and instruments.
  • Assembles and wraps appropriate instruments for sterilization, inspects each instrument for use, function, completeness and cleanliness.
  • Coordinates with Materials Dept to ensure facility sets are stocked to PAR levels.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all BCSC policies, procedures and standards and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization 
  • Communicates with operating room staff and/or vendors to provide required instruments.
  • Responsible for reporting damaged or malfunctioning equipment to Materials Dept and follow process for replacement or repair
  • Serves as a resource to nursing staff in all departments regarding responsibilities of proper sterilization techniques. Provides department updates at staff meetings.
  • Is familiar with organization, department and job specific Environment of Care areas, including Life Safety, Hazardous Materials Communications, Emergency Preparedness, Infection Control and Medical Equipment Failure.
  • Adheres to Standard Precautions as appropriate, which may include: the use of protective barriers, as appropriate (e.g., gloves, masks, gowns, pocket masks, and/or safety glasses); handling and disposing of infectious waste appropriately; and hand washing as appropriate.
Occupational Exposure: 
Category I exposure to bloodborne pathogens, frequent exposure to chemical hazards and may encounter radiation hazards.
 
Qualifications:
Must satisfy the required licensure/certification within 18 months of employment: Certified as a CSPDT (Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician) or CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) or qualifying experience per state guidelines.  Experience in central processing functions preferred.  Require constant and frequent judgment and response.  Require language skills for communication in American English. Must have interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills. Require high-level visual and auditory acuity for timely response and patient care activities.  Ability to move quickly in response to physician and patient needs, occasional overhead and low reaching, bending, and the ability to exert force of up to 50 lbs. occasionally, up to 20 lbs. frequently and/or up to 10 lbs. constantly. Demonstrates ability to stand and/or walk at least five hours per day.

Experience: 
Two years in central processing functions preferred.
