Position Overview

DSN is seeking a full-time Development Test Engineer to support the Large Power Systems Division's Core Components team, which focuses on the development and validation of core internal engine components, including rotating components, valvetrain, cylinder pack, heads, blocks, and housings.

 

This role is responsible for planning, coordinating, conducting, analyzing, and communicating results from engine development and validation testing. The engineer will work closely with design and simulation engineers to translate development needs into effective test plans, coordinate testing activities with technicians and other process partners, evaluate data quality and test results, and communicate conclusions and recommended next steps to stakeholders.

 

Testing may include vibration, structural dynamics, stress/strain, and other mechanical validation activities performed on engines, packaged gensets, and related systems. Experience with vibration testing, strain gauges, accelerometers, data acquisition, modal testing, rotating machinery, engines, or similar mechanical systems is highly beneficial.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, conduct, analyze, and manage engine structures & dynamics validation tests for core engine systems and components, including packaged gensets, rotating components, cylinder pack, and head & block.

• Evaluate complex structural failure modes and provide technical guidance and expertise to drive product development and improvement solutions.

• Utilize data acquisition systems (eDAQ, LMS, cDAQ) and analyze data using linear vibration, stress/strain, ME-SCOPE, and LMS tools.

• Perform modal testing and coordinate the design and procurement of prototype hardware.

• Set up tests, including instrumentation and gaging, as appropriate.

• Establish and maintain strong working relationships with internal clients and cross-functional teams, including design and simulation.

• Lead project planning, generate reports, and communicate test conclusions and results to stakeholders.

• Identify opportunities to improve validation efficiency and champion new process initiatives.

• Effectively multitask and manage priorities across multiple concurrent engine programs.

Work Environment & Team Structure

Testing is conducted across a variety of on-engine and bench test settings, including onsite engine labs, an engine center in Lafayette, IN, proving grounds in Peoria, IL and Tucson, AZ, third-party engine and shake labs, and field sites. This role may require up to 25% travel. The team consists of 10 test engineers supported by 4 technicians.

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.

• 2+ years of relevant testing experience.

• Basic understanding of internal combustion engines and machinery required.

• Understanding of structural dynamics/vibration, NVH testing, and structural simulation preferred.

• Strong project management skills, initiative, and attention to detail.

• Strong technical communication skills, with an understanding of customer needs and product application.

• Proven ability to build strong working relationships and collaborate effectively across multiple teams.
