The Facilities Technician is responsible for supporting the safe, efficient, and well-maintained operation of YMCA facilities. This role performs hands-on maintenance, repairs, and preventative care across buildings, equipment, and grounds to ensure a clean, functional, and secure environment for members, program participants, staff, and the community.

Working in alignment with the YMCA's mission and values, the Facilities Technician responds to maintenance requests, supports safety and compliance standards, and collaborates with branch leadership to deliver high-quality experiences across all facilities.

SALARY RANGE: $30.00 - $35.00 / hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform routine maintenance, inspection, and repair of building systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, aquatic).
  • Conduct facility inspections to identify and resolve maintenance, safety, and operational issues.
  • Maintain pool systems, including water chemistry, equipment, and compliance; safely handle chemicals per regulations.
  • Monitor facility conditions (HVAC, lighting, plumbing, pool systems, and overall operations).
  • Respond to and prioritize work orders based on urgency and impact.
  • Complete preventative maintenance on schedule and document all work accurately.
  • Maintain records of maintenance, inspections, and compliance activities.
  • Coordinate with vendors/contractors and manage inventory of parts and supplies.
  • Support inspection readiness (fire/life safety systems, backflow, pool compliance).
  • Perform minor repairs, including carpentry, painting, and general maintenance.
  • Follow all safety procedures (PPE, lockout/tagout, chemical handling) and ensure regulatory compliance (including Cal/OSHA).
  • Communicate facility improvement needs to supervisors.
  • Participate in meetings, trainings, and on-call rotation; respond to emergencies and after-hours needs.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas; support facility upkeep and projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, climb, and perform repetitive physical tasks.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in mechanical rooms, on rooftops, and in outdoor environments.
  • Ability to safely handle tools, equipment, and chemicals using proper safety procedures.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Indoor and outdoor work environments.
  • Exposure to mechanical systems, utility areas, and varying weather conditions.
  • May require response to urgent or emergency situations outside normal working hours.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical/trade training preferred.
  • 3 plus years of facilities maintenance or building operations experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and pool systems.
  • Familiarity with fire/life safety systems and regulatory inspection processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret building plans, manuals, and technical documents.
  • Basic computer skills (work order systems, email, reporting tools); CMMS experience preferred.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification preferred or ability to obtain within 90 days.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to travel between locations and work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and on-call as needed.
