School Counselor

We are seeking a full-time School Counselor to join our Student Support Team and provide counseling and social-emotional support at our Mountain View campus.

The German International School of Silicon Valley (GISSV) serves students from preschool through high school across our Mountain View and San Francisco campuses in a bilingual setting. We are committed to creating an inclusive, supportive, and nurturing learning environment in which every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Our Student Support Team (SST) is an integral part of this mission. The team includes counselors, inclusion specialists, and classroom specialists who collaborate closely with teachers, administrators, students, and families to support students' academic, social-emotional, and developmental needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support students in developing skills related to emotional regulation, self-awareness, self-advocacy, communication, relationships, conflict resolution, and problem-solving.
  • Provide individual and small-group counseling.
  • Provide consultation and resources to staff to strengthen social-emotional support within the classroom.
  • Perform in-person observations of students in classrooms and play areas to assess social-emotional needs and safety risks in real-time.
  • Develop and implement actionable intervention plans and goals based on real-time assessments.
  • Support students during transitions, challenging situations, and periods of emotional distress.
  • Adjust counseling focus and student/class assignments as needed to respond to evolving institutional priorities, changes in student demographics, or the shifting clinical needs of the student body.
  • Collaborate with teachers, inclusion specialists, classroom specialists, administrators, and families to support students' social-emotional needs.
  • Participate in Student Support Team meetings and contribute to student support plans and progress monitoring.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and confidentiality.
  • Follow school policies and procedures related to student safety and mandated reporting.
  • Perform professional duties as assigned by the Head of Student Support Team or School Leadership to ensure the comprehensive safety and well-being of the school community.


Experience and Qualifications:

  • Degree in School Counseling, School Psychology, Social Work or related field.
  • Experience working with children grades 1-12 in an educational setting.
  • Experience and/or openness to work with elementary school students.
  • Strong understanding of child and adolescent social-emotional development.
  • Experience implementing mental health interventions and de-escalation techniques.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • German language skills and experience in a bilingual or international school setting are a plus.
  • Authorized to work in the US for any employer.


FLSA Classification: Exempt

Reports To: Head of Student Support Team

Location: 310 Easy St. Mountain View, CA 94043 (This is a site-based position requiring consistent physical presence during core school hours).

Pay Scale: $80,000-$110,000 annually, depending on qualifications and experience.
