Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a specialized field (e.g., Optics, Sensors, Audio/DSP, etc.), or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4 years of experience in opto-mechanical design and simulation for consumer electronics.
  • Experience performing STOP thermal and structural analysis and optical system modeling.
  • Experience in STOP design software (e.g., Zemax STAR module, Sigfit, CodeV).
  • Experience leading technical projects and collaborating with executive cross-functional engineering teams to deliver objectives and timelines.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field (e.g., Optics, Sensors, Audio/DSP).
  • Experience in Python for automating optical simulations, data post-processing, and generating design reports.
  • Familiarity with camera systems, sensors, and display technologies.

About the job:

In this role, you will be instrumental in the end-to-end development of advanced optical systems for future Pixel products, specializing in high-fidelity optical modeling and opto-mechanical performance analysis. This highly technical role requires deep expertise STOP (Structural, Thermal, Optical Performance) analysis. You will lead cross-functional efforts to define optical architectures and ensure manufacturability, leveraging your knowledge of optical systems to solve complex, ambiguity-driven design challenges.

The Technical-Engineering Imaging and Vision team develops Google Pixel hardware. As a multi-physics simulation engineer, you will play a critical role in shaping next-generation devices used by millions globally. From initial design and simulation to final analysis and validation, we develop the optical architecture that defines Pixel’s hardware.The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $159,000-$231,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct advanced optical system modeling and simulation, with a specialized focus on STOP thermal and structural analysis to predict and mitigate performance degradation under various environmental conditions.
  • Drive the optical design and architecture of displays.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical, Electrical, and Product Design teams to define specifications, manage tolerances, and ensure successful integration of simulated designs into mass-manufacturable hardware.
  • Develop, maintain, and execute complex optical models using industry-standard software and internal Python-based tools for analysis and visualization.
