Position Summary:

The Cardiovascular Technician, under the direct supervision of a physician assists with and/or performs all routine diagnostic and emergent therapeutic angiographic or catheterization procedures. Assures equipment is functioning properly. Produces and evaluates data, information and images used by the physician in the performance of the procedure. Assists team members in all aspects of patient care, monitoring patient’s vital signs, interpreting status information and performing functioning in one or more of the following: monitor, scrub, or circulating technologist. Educates patients, family members and catheterization team. Stocks inventory and all other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

  • Monitors patients blood pressure and heart rate using electrocardiogram (EKG) equipment during diagnostic or therapeutic procedures to notify the physician if something appears wrong. Adjusts equipment and controls according to physicians orders or established protocol.
  • Obtains and records patient identification, medical history, or test results.
  • Explains testing procedures to patients to obtain cooperation and reduce anxiety. Monitors the patients comfort and safety during tests, alerting physicians to abnormalities or changes in patient responses.
  • Attaches electrodes to the patients chests, arms, and legs, connects electrodes to leads from the electrocardiogram (EKG) machine, and operates the EKG machine to obtain a reading. Observes gauges, recorders, and video screens of data analysis system during imaging of cardiovascular system.

Checks, tests, and maintains cardiology equipment, making minor repairs to ensure proper operation

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED and must meet and/or be actively working towards a graduate of a certificate, diploma, associate, or baccalaureate academic program in health science (includes, but not limited to, cardiovascular technology, ultrasound, radiologic technology, respiratory therapy, Paramedic or EMT, or nursing) required

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in invasive cardiovascular technology (formal educational program clinical hours are considered) required
  • Experience with physiological monitoring systems and sterile scrub technique required


Certification/Licensure:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Must have active listening skills during patient interactions.
  • Should be a skilled critical thinker who can monitor patients and observe nuanced changes.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Good verbal communication skills.

Physical Requirements: Medium Physical Agility Test (PAT) Rating

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently (activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) required to stand, sit, and walk; occasionally (activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) to use hands, fingers; and frequently to talk or hear. The employee must exert 20 to 35 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
