Description

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Transportation Department Manager to lead and oversee transportation-related programs and projects within our organization. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing staff, coordinating project delivery, and ensuring that transportation projects are planned, designed, and constructed in accordance with applicable standards, regulations, budgets, and schedules. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise in transportation engineering, and the ability to collaborate effectively with clients, agencies, and internal teams to deliver high-quality transportation infrastructure solutions.


 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Transportation Department, including supervising staff, assigning workloads, and supporting employee development and performance.
  • Oversee the planning, design, and delivery of transportation projects such as roadways, highways, intersections, transit facilities, and related infrastructure.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, public agencies, and key stakeholders on transportation projects.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local transportation standards, regulations, and agency requirements.
  • Review and approve project scopes, schedules, budgets, technical deliverables, and invoices.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated project delivery.
  • Provide technical oversight and quality control for plans, specifications, cost estimates, and reports.
  • Support business development efforts, including proposal preparation, project interviews, and client relationship management.
  • Monitor project performance, identify risks, and implement solutions to maintain schedule, budget, and quality objectives.
  • Mentor and guide engineers and technical staff, fostering professional growth, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay current with transportation industry trends, regulations, and best practices to drive continuous improvement within the department.

Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required or strongly preferred, depending on role responsibilities.

 

Experience:

  • 8+ years of experience in transportation engineering, project management, or related roles.
  • Demonstrated experience managing transportation projects such as roadways, highways, intersections, transit facilities, or multimodal infrastructure.
  • Proven experience leading teams and managing multiple projects concurrently.

 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of transportation planning, design standards, and construction practices.
  • Advanced understanding of federal, state, and local transportation regulations and agency requirements.
  • Excellent leadership, problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including experience interacting with clients, agencies, and stakeholders.
  • Experience with project budgeting, scheduling, cost control, and contract administration.
  • Proficiency with transportation-related design and project management software.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to meetings and project sites as required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with public transportation agencies such as IDOT, Illinois Tollway, FHWA, or municipal governments.
  • Knowledge of traffic engineering, ITS systems, safety analysis, or multimodal transportation planning.
  • Experience with grant-funded or federally funded transportation projects.
  • Advanced certifications in project or program management, transportation planning, or related fields.
