Mental Health Cooperative, Inc. (MHC) was formed in 1993 to serve individuals with severe and persistent mental illness.  Since then, we have expanded our services to children and adolescents with severe emotional disorders across Middle and East Tennessee.

Our sole purpose is to support and treat those challenged with serious mental illness and poverty. Although based out of Nashville, we serve several communities across middle and East Tennessee with satellite offices in Antioch, Gallatin, Dickson, Columbia, Cleveland, Murfreesboro, Clarksville, Cookeville, Chattanooga, and Memphis.

Position Summary:  To provide Psychiatric services to Emergency Psychiatric Services

Schedule: PRN (as needed)


Position Responsibilities: 

  • Evaluate and diagnose individuals who are experiencing a psychiatric emergent/urgent condition in EPS, face-to-face and/or by telehealth.

  • Pharmacological treatment for patients including prescribing medications and using OrderConnect.

  • Consult with MCRT when needed regarding dispositions from EPS services.

  • Complete Certificates of Need (33-6-404’s) when clinically indicated and work collaboratively with MCRT to ensure hospitalization referral process is completed. 

  • Coordinate medical aspects of treatment with Nurse, Discharge Specialist Care Management Supervisor and/or Care Managers.

  • Participate and provide supervision during daily report and provide consultation by phone when needed.

  • Seek supervision from supervising MD as appropriate.

  • Consult with outside providers regarding EPS consumers as needed.

  • Follow protocols as established by the EPS Medical Director, Medical Director and Director of EPS.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Valid Tennessee APN license with Psych & Mental Health Nurse Certification

Essential Requirements for the Position:

  • Valid Tennessee Driver’s License

  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)

  • Acceptable Criminal Background Investigation

  • Personal Automobile Insurance

  • Obtains up to date thorough knowledge of psychiatry and psychopharmacology
  • High level of communication skills with consumers
  • Familiarization with APA Practice Guidelines (American Psychiatric Association), current journals and other published information.

  • Good ability to do written evaluations

Time Management / Organization

  • Meet deadlines
  • Prepared for meetings
  • Progress Notes and Medication Orders are entered timely
  • Plan PTO in advance
  • Flexibility to adapt to different clinical settings when needed (Routine, Urgent, Emergent)

  • Assessments are complete and include accurate, thorough history-taking and required components of the mental status and/or physical exam.

  • Applies evidence-based medicine to clinical decisions and demonstrates awareness of quality improvement measures and application to clinical practice.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the contexts and systems in which services are provided and able to apply this knowledge to improve care.

  • Demonstrates ability to perform agency identified de-escalation and safety skills through agency-identified training and skills performance.
